Shipwreck Coast Olympic National Park

Memorial Day weekend my girlfriend and I headed out to shipwreck coast on the Olympic Peninsula. The initial plan was to hike the whole section of the Shipwreck Coast over the weekend, but due to several car issues and time restraints I wasn't going to be able to tow the car and drop it off at the other side. So we shortened the 20.5 mile trip to 17.5, than mid trip my girlfriend got really bad shin splints from climbing over all the rocks and we were racing the tides to get around Cape Johnson and the following caution point. Since I enjoy hiking with Heather and I didn't want to death march her with hast we turned back to the Chilean Memorial and pitched camp while the tide came in. the trip wound up being 9 miles round trip, the most down time I've ever had on a trip also… Thankfully Heather brought some cards. Day 1, we hiked out at twilight to Hole in the Wall and camped. Day 2 we made it to Cape Johnson, and turned around about an hour before the tide got too high. Day 3 we hiked back to the car. Looks like a very pretty area, Jared. Haven't spent much time in the PNW myself, but I do remember all the cool driftwood and other interesting things washed up on the shore.

Jared….I was there over the holiday weekend as well. I did a solo hike from Rialto to the Norwegian Memorial and camped there a few nights. On Monday I hiked back to the Chilean Memorial and spent the night there before hiking out on tues. Haha, looking at your photos, it looks like we both camped under the same alder tree at the Chilean Memorial…..

we dug out a flat spot just south out from under the tree after seeing that only an 1/8th of the tree roots were in the ground. we dismntled the other spot as much as possible, but that's the same spot!

did you have a ula pack and what looked like a berikade canister on the top inside the pack? if so you ran into us after we turned around at cape johnson while heathers shin splints took a break.

Yeah, that was me. I just passed the group of scouts and asked you guys if you were waiting on the tide, remember? I actually had two 1 gallon paint cans in my ULA pack for my hard sided containers. I just made it around the corner into the next cove and waited out the tide before heading on to Norwegian. I was disappointed to find out that there is a way to hike into Norwegian by way of a Cedar Creek trail from some logging road. Sounds like it's only a couple of miles. It was an awesome weekend to be there. Weather was amazing for that part of the country. I have some photos posted on my Picasa page. Had I known it was you, I would have stopped to chat.

I remembered cause I was going to ask you about your ULA pack and what you were using for your canister since it looked small enough to be a small bearikade and you were the only one I saw that didn't look like you were carrying a kitchen sink. My Jam2 was 3/4 filled, and most of it was cause the Garcia Canister I had from the Ranger station in it… Yeah the tide should of been low enough to cross it looked like it when we were at the cape, especially since you were carrying a light load. Heather wasn't going to be able to be pushed over all the rocks and make it to the second point though. We were constantly stopping at that point cause of her shin splints.

Sorry to hear about the shin splints. Those are no fun. At least it was a glorious couple of days to be there.
