Has anybody seen detailed information on this stove? Coleman has a full-page ad in the 2006 Backpacker Gear Guide (p 101) but I can find nothing further on the web.

It appears to be an evolution of the Xtreme, but with the added dimension of being multi-fuel. They’ve moved the valve to the burner (or added a second valve, Dragonfly-style) and it continues to sport a generator tube (perhaps implying it uses Max cartridges but the ad says “standard butane/propane cartridges”). No details on a WG fuel tank or pump.

The base is magnesium alloy and the pot supports, titanium. Putting on speculation hat, the rather wide burner appears to be surrounded by an integral priming cup; there’s no priming cup below.

Of course, no weight’s given in the ad.

    Anybody know more?

It seems that Coleman will have two different Fyrestorm Stoves. One version in Ti and one version in SS. I received this from Coleman and they use the word “Threaded Canister” so I guess that leaves out the PowerMax Canister unless they have changed the way they connect it to the stove.

    Fyrestorm Ti

    Model 9770-A25
    • One of the lightest Multi-fuel backpacking stoves in the world
    • Ultra-lightweight titanium burner and pot supports with magnesium alloy legs
    • Powerful new design runs on Coleman® fuel, unleaded gasoline, or threaded butane/propane canisters
    • Instant-light feature in liquid mode reduces time from start-up to full ignition, saving fuel and time
    • Liquid-withdrawal method for canister fuels produces improved performance in colder weather and high altitude
    • BTUs Liquid: 10,000/ Boil time: 3.8 min / Burn Time: 75 min
    • BTUs Canister: 14,000/ Boil time: 3.2 min / Burn Time: 45 min
    • Stove Weight: 8 oz./ Stove & pump unit: 11 oz. / Stove & canister adapter: 11.8 oz.
    • MSRP: $189.99

(Like the Fyrestorm SS 9977-A25 except for material.

9970 Titanium and 9975 is Stainless Steel.)

    Fyrestorm SS

    Model 9775-A25
    • Multi-fuel stove runs on Coleman® fuel, unleaded gasoline, or threaded canisters fuel
    • Stainless steel burner and pot supports with magnesium alloy legs
    • Instant-light feature in liquid mode reduces time from start-up to full ignition, saving fuel and time
    • Unique liquid-withdrawal method for canister fuels produces improved performance in colder weather and high altitude
    • BTUs Liquid: 10,000/ Boil time: 3.8 min / Burn Time: 75 min
    • BTUs Canister: 14,000/ Boil time: 3.2 min / Burn Time: 45 min
    • Stove Weight: 10.1 oz./ Stove & pump unit: 13.1 oz. / Stove & canister adapter: 13.9 oz.
    • MSRP: $149.99

(Like the 9970-A25 except for material. 9975-A25 has SS. Burner and weight.

9970-A25 has titanium burner and weights less.

Now that’s some fine sleuthing, Bill.

They’re not planning on giving these away, are they? I think it’s a positive sign that Coleman’s refocusing on the backpacking market after a few years adrift.

I agree with your conclusion that these will use run-o-the-mill Lindal-valve canisters. I’ll go a step further and speculate the “canister adapter” will invert the can to get liquid feed to the generator.

“Instant-light” implies they’re perhaps using a scheme similar to SnowPeak’s WG stove in eliminating priming. If they pull it off w/o the typical fireball, more’s the better.

Not being a global traveler, I’m not terribly smitten by liquid fuel/canister stoves, but somebody starting out might consider the capability a positive. To me, the more interesing implication is that this could represent the first of several new stoves from Coleman. If so, whether any use the Max cartridges remains to be seen.

Thanks Roy, that answers a lot of questions.

The cartridge inverter seems a little…overengineered.

There are several interesting items on page 37. It looks like an adaptor to go from a threaded canister connector to the PowerMax Canister on the Xtreme stove. That may also be usable on the new stove to go from a standard threaded connector to the PowerMax canister.

Anyway it is good to see what looks like forward movement in Colemans development of new backpacking products. I hope to see some of these new products in person soon.
