Anyone have experience with Chia seeds?
Chia seeds have a good carb, protein, fat ratio; high in EFA’s; ultra-light; consistency similar to poppy seeds; can be added to water as a drink or just about any food; slow absorption/burn rate; long shelf life; inexpensive.
"For centuries this tiny little seed was used as a staple food by the Indians of the south west and Mexico. Known as the running food, its use as a high energy endurance food has been recorded as far back as the ancient Aztecs. It was said the Aztec warriors subsisted on the Chia seed during the conquests. The Indians of the south west would eat as little as a teaspoon full when going on a 24hr. forced march. Indians running form the Colorado River to the California coast to trade turquoise for seashells would only bring the Chia seed for their nourishment." -William Anderson
Chia isn't just for Chia pets. You can also buy or grind your own chia flour. We use Chia quite a bit around here. It is a great source of iron and potassium (has about 2x the potassium of bananas and I think something like 3x the iron of spinach).
Just make note that when you add it to water the chia seeds gel a bit… in case you are like me and don't like gels or slimey textures.
