i made a prototype of mono-pole tent by using Tyvek for the body and Dyneema X Gridstop for cap and reinforcement.
also plz take a look my site.
http://web.me.com/catchy/SlowLite/Apr 28, 2009 at 12:54 am #1497461Nice!
What does it weigh? Is it for 1 person or 2?
EDIT: Specs from website………
conical shape, mono-pole, 11 stakes, 2 person+, 4 season, water resistant, breathable, for mild weather condition
seam-line less design, made in japan
dry weight : 21.9 oz. (620g) (without a pole and stakes)
radius 5’ (150cm)
height 6’ (180cm)
Apr 28, 2009 at 7:08 am #1497494Very nice jotaro. How did you do the Dyneema gridstop reinforcement at the top? Any pics of the reinforcement?

Very nice job job! Why did you use McNett Silnet versus McNett Seam Grip for the seams?
Apr 28, 2009 at 11:49 am #1497547Neat. Teepee/(pyra-)mid style tents are really cool IMO, and I like seeing one made of Tyvek.
I'm interested in how you do the reinforcement cap since it seems the stresses would be concentrated at the peak and getting that right is key to a strong, weather-worthy teepee/mid.
Apr 28, 2009 at 6:40 pm #1497639how did you manage to keep it seamless?
Apr 29, 2009 at 2:11 am #1497740thanks folks to be interested in my trial.
i've been interested in using tyvek for the body of my tent since i have been using henry's tyvek sublite . its light enough and i liked its design and concept itself. then i started thinking to make my own with tyvek.
i thought tyvek is not so durable compare to sil-nylon. in fact, my tyvek sublite tore once along with seam-line where seam-line does work like tear-off line causes by continuous tiny hole of needle and when and where the tension maximized. so that i have to be careful to seam with more thin needle than #14. the strength of tear resistance of tyvek 1443R which i used is 9.2 kgf/5cm. i've been considering while i was planning this and make it sure to have enough strength by reinforcement using dyneema x grid stop.
i didn't say no seam line with this but it has less seam line. because of i am using 3.3 yd wide tyvek 1443R. i must say its not so easy to handle this huge material.
i experienced mild and rather hard rain and wind with this. but it seems to me ok so far. since i'm not a serious extreme hiker. i didn't have any condensations and leaks at that time, even if this prototype has no vent-hole. i though this has enough capacity surface area and air while tyvek takes breath.
i'm going to keep on testing with this and find out to make this better.
and i will make with different version of soft tyvek which has 1.5 times durable than this version.i must say special thanks to henry who inspired me a lot to make this.
Apr 29, 2009 at 9:20 am #1497810Thanks for the tip on using a smaller needle. I'll remember that. And yes, that wide material is hard to handle without a giant work table.
It's interesting to me that type 1443R tyvek worked so well for you in the rain. I got some from a local kite company and while it breathed quite well, a simple test where I put a liter of water inside the tyvek and tied it up with a string showed the water very quickly 'weaping' through. The tyvek appeared to be of very uneven thickness though–maybe I got a bad piece.
Apr 29, 2009 at 6:29 pm #1497927keep on posting as you make progress. We're reading.
Apr 29, 2009 at 7:11 pm #1497938i got my tyvek from local agricultural company in japan. actually they don't call it 1443R. however, at my observation, i presumed it as 1443R. and they have two kind of tyvek and they gives different number of item from which i saw at a web site about tyvek of the US DuPont. and the other tyvek next time i try to use, which 1.5 times durable and thick but not stiff, has a different surface from 1443R. i wonder how many versions of tyvek exist.
Aug 15, 2009 at 9:47 am #1521090I have added some major update for my tyvek shelter.
Aug 15, 2009 at 6:56 pm #1521166Very well done,
When ever I see a teepee I am reminded of Eustace Conway (reading the book now for the second time).
Keep it up mate, looks really cool
Aug 16, 2009 at 9:01 am #1521222Great improvements have been implemented.
Ventilation will be improved performance.素晴らしい改良が行われましたね!
これで換気性能も、グンと向上したことでしょうJSBも、とても注目しています!
Aug 16, 2009 at 11:06 am #1521237So have you had a chance to give it a substantial water test. I am testing the cloth grade of tyvek from quest which would be 1443R. It has a perforated pattern on it. One side is sort of more plastic and smoother than the cloth side.
I made a folded cone, filled it up with water and it does leak or a better word would be weep, but just a little. After 2 days its still holding water. It leaks at first then pretty much stops.
If you rub the outside it will start weeping again, but just for a short while then stops.
I have it set up over an aluminum pot in the kitchen, and it leaks so little that in the morning the leaked water has evaporated.
I intended to build a shaped tarp with it, but started second guessing after seeing the initial weeping of the material. Now that I realize that the weeping is very slight and this material does breath, I think it might work in a setup like yours. I do think a good slope and taught pitch would be imperative.

Thak you. Eustace Conway's story is very interesting for me as he is same age. I have to read his book.>JSB
Thank you. Arigato Gozaimasu. I have to make this more refined. I'm looking forward to show you this in next meeting.>Troy
Thank you for apt suggestion.
I haven't had a chance to do like that. but I have experienced from actual study like following.
When I used this tent rather hard rain with wind gust almost all night, I observed several "weeping" spot. At first I thought it must be condensation. but I promptly noticed that there is only place got wet where is not along with seam sealed seam line. If it was condensation, it must have wet evenly all over surface inside of the tent. It may possibly caused by unevenness of surface since Tyvek is nonwoven Spunbonded olefin. And I didn't get wet so much and nor condensation at that time. Anyway, I was hardly wet. I think it is not so big problem to use this material so far. After these experience, I am convinced of Tyvek is suitable material for light weight shelter for general hiking purpose. But I don't say it is suitable for extreme condition.
Hello ! How are you getting along ? Amazing Tipi !
I love my Vertex Tipi made by Titaniumgoat.
Do you have a plan to attach the removable stove pipe port such as Titaniumgoat's ?
Their "Port" is made with a kind of grassfiber, that is fire resistence.
But too heavy for ultraliters.
So , any idea like Carbon Felt ?Aug 19, 2009 at 3:20 pm #1521898
Kawasaki san,
Thank you for valuable advice.
Since I have seen the carbon felt at last meeting. I 'm having an idea to install a removable stove boots to my tipi like Titaniumgoat's one. Hopefully, I will develop it including a lite weight stove in the near future.Oct 8, 2009 at 9:49 pm #1534537Now I realized that my using Tyvek 700AG is different from Tyvek 1443R.
As first signt, they look like almost the same. We couldn't notice difference even if we observed surface closely. but when I went to a trail with my friend who brought his own MYOG Tyvek shelter made by Tyvek 1443R. We noticed difference of surface between mine and his Tyvek.Oct 17, 2009 at 4:29 pm #15373071.1oz Sil-Nylon, W8.5ft x D4.3ft x H3.5inch
Oct 17, 2009 at 9:38 pm #1537365Very nice…Can't wait to see how this evolves!
Oct 18, 2009 at 9:21 am #1537426Do you make sil-nylon version>
