I am planning an AZT hike beginning early to mid March of 2016. Above is the link to my gear list thus far. I need help getting the weight down a little. Its interesting planning for hot dry desert and snowy conditions all in one trip. I am shooting for a 12 lb. base weight, but I’m at over 13 lb. right now without guide book or maps. I am 6’5″ and 200 lb. so some things like my sleeping bag are heavier. I have lots of experience tarp camping but not with a bivy sack as well. I am thinking a bivy would be a good idea for the snowy, cold and windy conditions I am likely to encounter. What are your thoughts on my list? Thanks.
That’s a nice looking gear list Adrian. I can’t see much fat that you can cut from it. As you stated, the FAK and repair kit could be pared down.
The Silver Ridge shirt is a good choice because there are many sections of the AZT where the Cat’s Claw is ferocious, so a durable tight knit shirt is the way to go. Something like merino or capilene will run and shred to pieces. Cat’s Claw is aptly named by the way.
I don’t know about relying on twig fires though. I’d strongly suggest bringing along Esbit and/or alcohol on the AZT. I think you’ll find it a struggle to rely on wood in many areas. As far as water, I’m sure you’ve already checked out sources on the AZ trail website. March is a good time for water availability though. As you know H2O is the biggest concern on the AZT.
The North Kiabab Plateau section of the trail is awesome. Probably the best kept backpacking secret in Arizona. Good luck on your hike. Wish I was going with you.
Monte,
I take it that you have hiked the AZT. If so when did you start and finish? Did you run into snowy conditions? Do you think the Bivy on my list is necessary? I know people tarp camp it without but I also know people get caught in significant spring snows. I’m just hesitant to pull the trigger on another pricy piece of gear.
