I’ve have done a little searching and noticed that EMS has a down jacket on sale for $77. It is a little heavy, but if I get his jacket, then I have budget for some other light things for some good weight savings.
Anyone have experience with this jacket?
Dec 16, 2005 at 7:07 pm #1347059If weight isn’t an issue and budget is take a look at land’s ends down jacket with hood. The size large I got for work weighs 1#8oz.with hood,650 fill, for $69.50. They also have free 2nd day shipping through the holiday.
I’ve been wearing mine in 5 degree weather and have been real pleased.Dec 16, 2005 at 7:51 pm #1347061Thanks for the tip Larry … challenge though is I need XXL and it appears they (Land’s End site) are out. I’ll do some searching to see if anyone has one around.
Dec 17, 2005 at 9:20 am #1347085Larry, your comment about $69.50 down jacket piqued my curiosity. Thanks for the tip. The Lands End Quilted Down Jacket has a nylon shell and 650 fill down. The online chat info service was pretty handy. There, Darcy called to the product information folks who reported that the men’s size L coat, Item #04025-1AF6 has a shell weight of 2.12 ounces and a total weight of 2 lb. 4 oz.
That is certainly not the lightest down jacket but it may fit the bill for those of us that only need high loft insulation a few times each winter.
$70 leaves plenty of opportunity to reduce gear weight in other areas.
Dec 17, 2005 at 10:21 am #1347088I rewieghed my size large and it came out at 1#13 5/8 oz. so I would guess their weights must be all over the map.
I have a really bad habit of wearing my light stuff to work, a couple of goretex jackets, a softshell, and a patagonia down jacket later I’m trying to learn a lesson.Dec 17, 2005 at 12:11 pm #1347098I’ve got the jacket in size M and also the vest. The vest was $39. They are selling these at Sears, so if you have one nearby you might check them out. I really like the jacket, it’s very warm. I especially like the detachable hood. The hood weighs about 3.5 oz and would be nice for sleeping if you have a hoodless bag or quilt. My size M weighs about 32 oz.
I’m not sure I would use the jacket for backpacking because of the weight and bulk, but overall I recommend it.

Dec 17, 2005 at 4:09 pm #1347114Well, I took the leap and bought the XXL (Granite Color) EMS Glacier Jacket on sale at $77. I really like this jacket. Excellent fit for the size that I need.
Oh, and the question of the day of what is the “real” weight ………..
……….
……….
1 lb. 7.6 oz. for my XXL. Not too shabby for the $$$ to weight ratio.
Dec 17, 2005 at 4:58 pm #1347117Michael, I think that you’re going to enjoy your Glacier Jacket. I picked one up last December on sale and it’s become my go-to cold weather jacket. I’ve found it to be very warm and durable.
Dec 17, 2005 at 8:24 pm #1347134Looks like I’m too late, but here’s an even better deal. I saw them side-by-side next to TNF Nuptse a couple years ago. Identical as far as I could tell. I’d bet my pants they’re made in the same factory with nearly identical materials.
My XXL TALL weighs 23 oz. Not sure how much you can tell by pictures, but the one I have looks to have much more loft than the EMS jacket. Particularly in the shoulders and chest, the baffles are nearly busting. Definitely not the lightest out there, but $39 is tough to beat.
