Anyone seen one of these? Wondering how they work. I know its not going to be very good for avalanches but could be a good alternative for digging a base in the snow for your shelter.
Saw this on this website.
Feb 25, 2009 at 12:12 pm #1480656Very cool, I've been looking for one of these for a while. Any idea of where to find a better picture?
Feb 25, 2009 at 1:36 pm #1480683Sorry, I don't.
Feb 25, 2009 at 1:49 pm #1480690Check out Grivel's "Steel Blade" found under "Rescue" on http://www.grivel.com
Feb 25, 2009 at 3:27 pm #1480718Some more information HERE Patrick. It weighs just over 400g, and is made of plastic with a steel blade insert.
Mar 3, 2009 at 4:51 pm #1482438no, I was thinkng of the shovel – I was thinking of buying a Vole XLM and cutting it down for use with an ice axe
Mar 4, 2009 at 9:55 am #1482635Years ago MSR made an aluminum shovel blade that attached to an ice axe. I have one somewhere. I recall it was pretty light. Perhaps they still make it.
Mar 4, 2009 at 10:25 am #1482654No, no one makes them anymore, I think the closest would be the Grivel one, and its a little heavy. Could you post pics?
I've been looking for one for quite a while and if I cant buy one I might make my own.Mar 4, 2009 at 8:01 pm #1482863I got a reply from Akio, the author of the Japanese blog.
"That shovel is MIZO titanium shovel (weight 290g).

MIZO is japanese climbing gear manufacture and they have their web site only in Japanese."I have emailed him a bunch of questions.
Cheers

"That attachment works as per the photo below.
http://beyondx.exblog.jp/8912752Sometimes detached. But originally the shovel was designed for 180g alminum shaft for the shovel(http://www.mizo.co.jp/mountain/mc15_moole.html).
The width 17cm, depth 20cm, thickness 1.2mm.
Stronger than alminum blade, less stronger than iron one.
I had only used it to normal snow and midium hard snow pack, so far so good, no bending. But I do not think it is good for debris."Mar 5, 2009 at 5:55 am #1482926Huzefa, very cool. Thanks for getting that info for us!
