Just an idea for consideration:
A portable battery-powered electric fence controller, such as:
http://www.hallman.ca/2705.htm
and a metal food storage bag, such as:
http://www.armoredoutdoorgear.com/
weight – 3 to 3 1/2 lbs (batteries included)
Might be the ultimate food protection system – against both bears and rodents. Weight seems to be the major obstacle. But the battery-powered electric fence controller is the heaviest part, and since it is made for a fence up to 2 miles in length and continuous use for 4 weeks, might it not be possible to decrease the number of batteries or the size of the batteries (and thus weight) by substituting fewer and/or AA batteries?
Interesting problem. If all you want to do is protect a small metalized bag or box, any fence charger is going to be gross overkill. The technology is there for significantly lighter options.
Think of a small stun gun, that instead of constant operation, only pulses about once every 3 seconds, but doesn’t produce an actual spark (aka dumb’ed down stun gun), just a lower voltage for a small part of a second. Thats basically what a fence charger is. (also realize though, that you have to drive a stake into the ground for a fence charger to work)
If there’s enough interest, I could build some of these that should run for several <dry> days on a single battery.
Regards,
Mike
