    Locale: Southeast Alaska

Cabin lightA friend coined the phrase wooden tents — referring to the Forest Service and Alaska Park Cabins here in the Tongass National Forest — when reporting that we would be moving away from bivies and tarps for the fall rainy season.

The early onset of darkness and the almost constant rain does make the idea of a cabin at the end of the trail more appealing than even the Pyramid. So, following a well established tradition following Thanksgiving, we went to Camping Cove cabin for the night. The trail is 38 miles “out the road” from downtown Juneau and close to the end of the northern route that ends abruptly at Echo Cove just a few miles north from where we started our hike.

The trail is not well marked and not maintained at all. Three distinct phases bring you down to the beach across a short shoulder of a point and finally into a mud soaked path through the forest to the Cove. From there it is possible to cross over a small mountain and connect with the trail and cabins along the coast of Berner’s Bay. We stayed at the first cabin with friends and enjoyed a relatively dry afternoon and evening.

This isn’t a big hike, just a necessary one for November’s fading light.Forest Trail
