This past week I worked in Sand Point, Alaska for five days. Surprisingly, the sun shone each day, and didn’t set until 10:30, allowing me time after my work was finished to walk along the trails and scramble on the tundra toward the peaks. There are no bears on the Shumagin Islands making it a gift for anyone who might be interested in some great walks in beautiful terrain. Sand Point has scheduled air service from Anchorage and a decent store for supplies. Locals could provide transportation to the larger Unga Island seen pictured in the distance on this photograph.
A place in Alaska without bears sounds intriguing. Thanks for the photos, Joseph. Consider adding some of the photos to the "Ultralight Backpacking" group I manage on Flickr.
