Jul 21, 2008 at 2:33 pm #1443800I got a size Large Outdoor Research Zealot yesterday for $89 shipped. Woo hoo!
Last month was Montrail Hardrocks for right at $40 shipped. Woo hoo!
Jul 21, 2008 at 3:11 pm #1443807Dang it, that was the second time I missed out on the Zealot!
Guess I'll just have to settle for the REI Outlet price of $114.
Jul 21, 2008 at 3:37 pm #1443812Chris,
Congrats on snagging that zealot. I was not sure about it.I have been busy on that site. I got a OR mentor jacket for about 140, Arcteryx theta bibs for about 150, OR chaos for about 100, 2 MH pack pants for about 50 each from STP, some 650 fill down, fleece and rain wear from cabelas for about 50 % Off,ems techwick shirts about 40 % off, and a primaloft jacket from northern lights for about 60.
I need to slow down but I don't know how ! :)Jul 21, 2008 at 4:24 pm #1443819Raj,
You're going to burn out mate. Take a deep breath. Now write a list You already have a fair idea of what you want, so put it down on paper. Otherwise you're going to be taking home a mountain of stuff that's not suitable for what you're planning on using it for. Just remember "There's no such thing as cheap boots that almost fit" ie even though you only paid $100 for your Chaos, and it's a great jacket (I have one) it doesn't really fit in the system you're setting up. For proper -10C cold, a down jacket is much more weight and space efficient. For daytime temps over 0C the Chaos is too much jacket, and a Fraction or Neoplume would work better.
Once you have your list, find the RRP, and set a discount target. ie, you may want to save 35% Then only buy the stuff on the list. You might have multiple choices on a category, but once you buy one, cross them all out.
On the list you're looking at, I reckon you'll save at least $1000-$1500, just by not buying stuff that doesn't fit your system. And to paraphrase Mike, buying something that's almost right won't stop you from buying the right thing AS WELL.
Regards, Rod

You're right. I have been looking at gear deals too much. The thing about chaos is that I plan to go during wet weather in the himalayas. I'm not totally sure about getting leave during the right weather window.
I also plan to do basic mountaineering course in India. So in that sense chaos would function very well.
There's a lot of places I could go in the indian himalayan states that will have wet cool/cold weather. It runs from April to September. This is also peak season for himalayan expeditions.
I thought about it a great deal before I made the purchase. Cold dry weather is during September-March.
Let me know your thoughtsJul 22, 2008 at 2:02 pm #1444020I can't believe I didn't know about steepandcheap. I just spent a ridiculous amount of hours searching for the best deals on a micropuff and a zealot. Finally pulled the trigger at backcountry. Irony is, while using their chat feature the other day, there was a little automated blip about steepandcheap and gearlove. Sounded like ridiculous made up names – I thought is was a joke. Ugh.
