Just a heads up for a new point and shoot digital camera that was introduced April 22, 2008. It may be of interest to backpackers-excuse the redundancy if it's already been mentioned.
From dpreview.com:
-Smaller and lighter than the popular Ricoh Caplio 500G.
-Superior water and dust resistance-in compliance with US Department of Defense "Mil Standard 810F", whatever that means!
-Powerful Flash
-Large 2.7 inch LCD
-Compact and lightweight body that can be carried in a breast pocket.
-28-140 zoom lens, wider than most, a perfect range for a backpacking point and shoot I might add.
-10 mega pixel sensor
-Comes with lithium ion battery, but will run on AAA batteries.
-Apparently no image stablization which I think is a desirable feature.
-Apparently no optical viewfinder which I think is a desirable feature, especially outside
