    exact same weight.

exact same fill type (down, synthetic, doesn’t matter). exact same shell material. exact same everything except design.

the vest concentrates its insulation to where it’s most needed, the core. as the vest uses less material and thus saves a bit of weight, it also has a bit more insulation too. however, it allows much heat to be “vented” through the arms.

which one do you think would “feel” warmer wearing?

assume you’re doing light chores around camp. assume you’re wearing a hat, a wool shirt, maybe mitts. assume you have just ate and have good circulation. assume there is no precipitation, the humidity is low and the temperature is around 5 celsius. make any necessary assumptions you feel are important.

In your set-up you say nothing about wind which could greatly change the answer. Related, there isn’t a windshirt layered over the combination?

With a windshirt I would expect the vest would be warmer. This seems like something that could be experimentally determined with one of the instrumented dummys they use for testing sleeping bags.

    Channing,

edit your post and try replacing your “square brackets” with “angle brackets” (as Software people would call them, aka “less than” AND “greater than” signs for you Mathemeticians out there). this replacement will give you the HTML bold effect that i believe you were trying to acheive.

yes, good point, mark. please assume there’s no wind.

i was also wondering if this could be experimentally determined. for example, if the dummy was colder in one part and hotter in another part but average overall, how would that compare with another dummy that is even throughout but slightly below average? with me, when my neck feels cold, i feel cold, even though i might be sweating (gross, i know).
