I got out this weekend with a friend for an overnight out and back trip on the North Country Trail near Brule, WI. Here are links to the sections we hiked: first part second part. We parked at the Highland town hall trail head Saturday morning and started hiking north in a light rain. In the first half hour the rain tapered off to a light drizzle. I was really impressed with the quality of the trail. It is well designed and very easy to hike. We passed in and out of pine plantations of various ages and several clear cuts on our way towards crossing hwy 27. The drizzle tapered off about half way through the hike but it was still damp and windy making it seem colder than it was. We spent the night at the Paul Schoch campsite. The campsite is located on a small ridge in between two clear cut areas. The campsite was nice and we had a pleasant evening sitting around a fire and sipping some Glenlivet.
The next morning we packed up and had an unevenful hike back to the car. The section that we picked to hike turned out to be perfect for the conditions this weekend. Even though there was still snow on the trail in a few areas the trail was basically dry because the whole strech we were hiking on is on sandy soil. It made a perfect place for an early season hike. Hiking this section makes me excited for when the rest of the NCT is finished in Douglas county.
Sorry I have no pictures! When I first took the camera out the battery died.
