I have not yet found an ABC watch (i've tried Casio and Garmin) that has a reliable Altimeter/Barometer/Compass functions. I know the SUUNTO are popular, but most reviews don't rate them much higher than Garmin. I realize altimeter readings are a effected by pressure, and recalibrating is necessary, but I'm wondering if theres something advanced enough to stay a little more calibrated for mountaineering. My Garmin watch had GPS assisting altimeter, and even then it was not that accurate. I'm not really looking for watch reccommedations unless theres something new coming out that may be an improvement over what is currently available. Is there a non-wristworn altimeter/barometer/compass out there? How about just an accurate altimeter?
Is there a non-wristworn altimeter/barometer/compass out there? Step into the 21st century and use your phone or other gps device with topographic maps. GPS locates you on the map… and just read the altitude from the contours on the map. Never off due to varying air pressure. Spot on location and the topo contours tell your altitude. These have compass too… though I still carry the old fashioned compass also. billy
This is best altimeter / barometer I've used that I'd take hiking. Dimensions are 2 1/2" x 2 3/4" x 3/4". Weight is 3.5 oz. No batteries, GPS or wifi needed. I do have a surveying altimeter which is good to one or two feet, but it's a beast, 5 pounds or so: Edited to add: with those, various water levels, my slide rule collection, and my distance from any population centers, I'll be the only consulting engineer left after the zombie / EM-pulse apocalypse.
I have one of those Thommen altimeters… like new… if anyone wants to buy it, make me an offer. billy
