Looking for suggestions on packets of instant apple cider. There seem to be quite a few options out there. Any that are better than others? Thanks!
Oct 26, 2015 at 9:41 am #2234058I've tried a lot of them (living in PA gives us a lot of options) and my favorite instant is by Alpine. It comes in a box of 12 packets for around $3.00. I've tried the Mott's (all the flavors) but I think they try too hard to make the flavors interesting.
Oct 26, 2015 at 11:29 am #2234075I'd agree on Alpine. Although, if you have a coffee supply store near (we do in the West, with Cash n' Carry stores), they sell a large tub for espresso shops of a dry powder, which is really good. Brand name is skipping my memory though.
Oct 26, 2015 at 12:20 pm #2234079If you care, note that there's not much actual apple content in the Alpine product, despite the prominent "Apple Cider" on the package. Mostly sugar and malic acid. Amazon will sell you a pound of food grade malic acid for about $20. I'll bet you could save a bunch by just mixing it with sugar yourself.
Oct 26, 2015 at 8:24 pm #2234192Thanks for the suggestions. I'd lean toward apple cider that has actual apple in it. ;-)
Oct 27, 2015 at 7:18 am #2234264I just checked the ingredients of both the Alpine and Mott's – they both have "apple juice solids" as the apple ingredient. Good luck with your search. I'd try a couple of different ones and, unless your doing a thru-hike and will be drinking multiple packets a day for months, it probably doesn't make a difference as long as you like it.
Oct 27, 2015 at 8:16 am #2234289My backpacking is pretty short-term these days, so it's easy to experiment. Going to hit the store(s) today and see what's out there. Will hopefully find enough variety to sample on an upcoming trip. Thanks all!
Oct 27, 2015 at 8:48 am #2234294If you are not doing hard miles, frankly….a single serving of organic Tree Top juice box, heated up with spices, is frankly quite good!
Oct 27, 2015 at 9:42 am #2234313Maybe in warmer weather, but with the additional weight of a winter bag & tent, I'd really like to stay as light as possible on anything else possible.
Oct 27, 2015 at 10:16 am #2234321You might want to look at cider concentrate instead of powder. http://mountaincider.com/index is one supplier.
Oct 27, 2015 at 12:29 pm #2234362It's 8 ounces ;-) And once you drink it, *poof*
