Mike Wolfe and Mike Foote (Missoula) accompanied by photographer Steve Gnam are traversing 600 miles from Missoula to Banf- the "Crown of the Continent" ecosystem. A combination of single track, double track and off trail and hoping to cover 35-40 miles a day. http://neverstopexploring.com/explore/crown-traverse/
getting a little late season for this. sure hope we don't find them next spring under a melting snow drift.
agreed- I think they might have purposely chosen this time to add to the difficulty????; they most definitely have seen snow already
Significant snow in the later part of September is actually rather uncommon (around here), and those last two weeks usually feature one of the biggest stretches of stable weather all summer (as they did this year). August is too hot even at 8k. Plus with the fires in August they had no choice. Unfortunately due to fire closures looks like they had to punt on a few route options, in Glacier especially, but doing an almost full traverse of the Flathead range would be an excellent consolation prize.
At first I thought they were starting now, but they are just about to finish. Big difference on the timing! A great adventure. I'll bet they've seen more people than wolverines, though.
they finished in 22 days (206 hours on their feet), not too shabby for 600 miles, much of technical off trail and over 150,000' of gain congrats Gents- you've done Montana proud!
A terrific accomplishment. Must feel pretty good.
