Is there such an animal? I've been using a cereal called Raw- typically it calls for microwaving, but I've been adding hot water, stirring, giving it 5-7 minutes and stirring once more- it's decent, but it's much better fully cooked as per direction. Is there a good whole grain hot cereal that is truly instant? I don't want the fuss, muss or mess of cooking cereal Thanks in advance Mike

Instant oatmeal is whole grain. Are you looking for multigrain or alternative grains? (altigrain?)

multi grain would be nice, no sugar or other stuff added the stuff I've been using is Better Oats RAW- whole oats, wheat, barley, flaxseed, quinoa and rye

If you want whole grain rolled oats, there's Bob's Red Mill: http://www.bobsredmill.com/shop/cereals/hot-cereal/instant-rolled-oats.html. You can add whatever to it for flavor (sweetener, dried fruit, etc). You could also try putting your Raw cereal in a blender and 'cutting' it up just a bit (not to powder) to make the oats a bit smaller. That might work for instant oats. Shouldn't affect the taste, but will affect how thick it seems.

If its for breakfast you could try ordinary wholegrain rolled oats, place then in your mug/pot in the evening, add dehydrated bananas/raspberries/etc, fill with cold water and set aside. It will be deliciously "cooked" by the morning, when you stir, add touch of honey, nuts, and enjoy with the morning coffee. Wont work in freezing temps obviously but any other time of the year its hard to beat. Healthy as hell too, as no heating is involved helping to retain vitamins/nutrients.

I get the Natures Path hot cereal with flax seed that comes in the same packet instant oatmeal come in. I eat them almost every day. I just add hot water from a coffee machine, stir and let it sit. They are pretty tasty. On the trail you could just boil up a bit of water or do as the previous poster said and let it sit over night. http://bit.ly/Jx7zKu Whole Foods also sells one called "Whole Foods 365 Organic Multi Grain With Flax Instant Oatmeal". I don't know if there is a Whole Foods in your neck of the woods though.

You can do ANY whole grain by cooking and dehydrating, then you have instant. While oats can be ground down to make instant, other grains are much harder on the stomach and need cooking.

Thanks for all the tips! I like the idea of soaking stuff overnight, but every where I hike I have to hang my food

Don't see why you couldnt make the food in your pot and put it in your bear bag and hang it? As long as it stays vertical and the food doesn't spill out or you make it in a ziploc it should be fine??

In a bag sealed, or in a container with a lid that screws on it would be OK to soak overnight. Nothing that can spill though ;-)

These ziploc twist n loc containers work great (Or the generic Target equivalent which is lighter and cheaper but still has a good lid). http://www.amazon.com/Ziploc-Twist-Containers-Small-Lids/dp/B003UEGZCA

Something like this might work? Lekue top These are made of pure silicon 100% neutral doesn't impart anything into food, very thin very light, you stretch it over your mug/pot and it should keep the contents inside (unless turned upside down I guess!) There are other sizes if you search through on amazon. I love these little tops and they are handy in everyday life too, for covering stuff in the fridge etc.
