Aluminum flashing from big box store, maybe 26 gauge

2.5 inches wide.  It would actually be a better windscreen if it was 4 inches wide but then it doesn’t fit into pot

22 inches long.  2 inches on each end are not folded, the middle 18 inches are folded every 1/2 inch.  I marked lines every 1/2 inch and then folded over a sharp edge (poor man’s press brake).  If I made several I’d make some sort of jig so I didn’t have to measure the 1/2 inches.

    #18 galvanized wire

I drilled 8 small holes near the top of the flashing for the wire to go through, mainly just to keep it in place

Bend one end of the wire into a little hook.

Feed the wire through the holes

Put the windscreen on the pot and bend over the other end of the wire into a hook, over the hook on the first end.  Adjusting the length so it holds the windscreen to the pot.

If the wire is too long, the windscreen will fall off, or not have enough pressure on the pot for good thermal conduction.

If the wire is too short you can’t get the windscreen to fit over the pot.

In use – connect the two hooks together so the windscreen forms a circle, and fit it onto the pot.

I’ve used this for years.  I finally replaced the galvanized wire because it got rusty.

I did some measurements – measured amount of water, measured temperature of water before and after, weighed butane canister before and after, repeated several times with and without windscreen – about 10% efficiency improvement

When the water starts to boil, you can see bubbles forming where the windscreen touches the pot – there is heat being conducted to the pot by the windscreen

If the windscreen extended down a bit it would be a better windscreen.  It goes a little below the burner, but it would be better if it went lower.  When I’m using it, I find a sheltered location, like behind some rocks.

On thing good about this (also Dan’s and the Caldera Cone among others) is that the hot exhaust air is channelled to the area right next to the pot where it has a chance of conducting heat to the pot.  A gap of about 1/4 inch is good.  More than that – less conduction to pot.  Less than that – not enough cross section for all the hot exhaust so it backs up and flows around the windscreen nowhere near the pot.
