The tables are turning, slowly, back to walk-able cities. We have a trolley car coming back on-line in one year. Streets are being re-stripped with bike lanes. And this is not a pleasant place to bike four months of the year either.

Good read… for so many Americans walking has become an alien concept. I lived on the isle of Manhattan for 15 years, where people do walk a lot and where statistically obesity is less of a problem… not that there aren't some really fat people there, however. Now living in a condo in the burbs, when I drop off my Dodge minivan for service or repair I'm always asked if I need a ride home, which is about 2.5 mi. I always walk, and sometimes I get a look from one of the service counter guys that says I'm a little "off". This, as their big beer guts crowd the keyboard for space on the counter.

i moved from the suburbs of DC to the city of Philadelphia over 2 years ago. i still drive my car because that's how i am used to getting around. i really need to switch my brain to picking walking as the first mode of transport. i need to be more city and less suburb minded… very difficult to embrace!
