Simplicity is my main theme lately and a no stove/cook setup is a big plus for me. I just picked up these 2 items at the store. How long do they need to rehydrate cold and do you still add the suggested amount of water or more/less?
I have a few meal ideas I am going to try out this week. Any recipes or advice is welcome.
Aug 24, 2015 at 9:06 pm #2222851Follow directions for couscous. It is best with 20 to 30 minutes soak time.
Aug 24, 2015 at 9:20 pm #2222857Instant mash with cold water is like 1 minute, pretty much instant.
Aug 24, 2015 at 10:21 pm #2222864If you repackage for smaller portions, you can make Ramen noodles and use the broth for your mashed potatoes. Those spuds are super easy and filling. I add olive oil and pepper ( to most things).
Aug 24, 2015 at 10:26 pm #2222866First time eating couscous tonight, I made it hot like the directions and ate some hot and waited for it to get cold to try as well. I really liked it. Added chicken from a pouch and at the end of the warm bowl I crushed some tortilla chips and added for texture and was very happy. Lots of possibilities here. Mashed taters will be tomorrow nights dinner. Need to find the instant gravy I read about on here.

Here is another way to do it as well: http://www.trailcooking.com/lunch/spring-pasta-salad/
Aug 27, 2015 at 3:58 pm #2223448Thanks for the ideas Sarah. Just tried the potatoes today, mmmmm those are great with the gravy. Add some pouch chicken or maybe pepperoni and I think I have my new staple meal. Anyone tried the potatoe flakes cold? I like the idea they are more natural
Aug 28, 2015 at 9:35 am #2223593I'll admit it…while I like a lot cold, I just can't do the mashed taters. Weird I know ;-)
Aug 28, 2015 at 10:50 am #2223619You are not Weird Eating room temp or less mashed potatoes and gravy is whats weird. It would induce most folks to vommit.
Aug 28, 2015 at 12:35 pm #2223646I am not saying that I'm not weird lol I am a very picky eater which actually works great for backpacking. I can go months eating the same meals with no complaints. Right now I have been eating wheaties for breakfast, sandwhich for lunch and salad for dinner. Been going on 3 weeks and I am still not tired of it.
Aug 28, 2015 at 11:08 pm #2223735I like to munch on ramen noodles right out of the package.. Sort of like noodle shaped saltines to me. So ,I am weird as well..:)
Sep 1, 2015 at 1:16 pm #2224400I couldn't speak to how long to rehydrate couscous with cold water — but I use coucous for breakfast. I prepackage with cinnamon and dried strawberries. Add water and honey and butter packets. Love it. Kelly
