I normally only carry one bic lighter and a few rain proof matches, but I'm not really in high altitude or extreme wind, so that's all I need.
Maybe check this out? 1.4 oz + .04 oz of fuel
Ultimate Survival Technologies Klipp Lighter?

This is the one I linked previously. I like it, but as with anything with piezo ignition one should have something super reliable as backup… as mentioned above, Vaseline cotton balls and firesteel. I've started fires with some quite damp wood using this combo.
I've never started an Esbit with cottonball/firesteel so I'm going to practice it next time I'm out. Seems it would be easy just to tear off a small bit of the Vaseline cotton ball, fluff up some of the dry fibers and stick the greasy part on top of the Esbit tab.

I use a Coleman, you've seen it in a few of my videos:

Jul 23, 2015 at 6:02 pm #2216637It was windy here today so I decided to test the cottonball/firesteel technique.
Worked great. Was able to light it easily with the Esbit in place inside the windscreen and the pot support. Took about 3 strikes for me to judge the spark throw correctly, but when it lit it burned very well.
Jul 23, 2015 at 6:20 pm #2216642You could even stick the cotton primer to the side of the Esbit tablet.
I think I will call them Copelly (COtton PEtroleum JeLLY
Or Copeje ?Jul 24, 2015 at 4:06 am #2216715Indeed, you can stick it anywhere you want. I was surprised how well the greasy stuff clung to the Esbit.
Definitely my go-to technique for lighting Esbit when it's windy.
Bunch of vids about this on YouTube.
Jon Fong demonstrates the Scrape Method. But for windy conditions the powder scrapings might pose a problem!
edit for youtube link
