Companion forum thread to:
I'm headed towards wearing out a pair of the Helios SR and agree they're a pretty great shoe. First thing I did was rip out the excessive tongue foam and I wish they were a little lower to the ground (closer to the Vertical K), but overall I've liked them. Traction is indeed fantastic on rock. I do wish La Sportiva would stick to a more simple upper and stop making such stiff heel counters.
Another use not mentioned is as a leak-proof container to hold alcohol for an alcohol stove.
The one ounce "shot glass" is also useful for estimating how much alcohol to use.
A 12oz Gatorade bottle with cap weighs 27 grams. I do like the shape of the flask though.
I've had the regular Helios for about 200 miles of trail (and no trail) and am interested in the SR. The Helios truly are some of the best shoes I've had. I love the toe and heel cups and the traction. One thing I don't like is the massive tread footprint it leaves. In short, it grips incredibly well and it tears up the dirt beneath you pretty bad. Sort of like "paddles" for a motorcycle. They also stand up pretty tall.
