How about a "thanks" option ?
    Those could be helpful features.
I used to think the simple layout was best, but now I wonder if the above mentioned options could help us self moderate based on easy community input.

I could see a Thanks or a Thumbs Up in the post-trip area, … but looking at the discontent on a number of threads, maybe not a thumbs down. You could see a group get together to down vote perfectly good threads or even phantom downvoters. Especially in "Gear" where one gear manufacturer may have employees "thumbs down" a perfectedly good competitor. Just to add its prolly better to discuss things in depth as many pieces of gear haven't changed much. I'm finding a lot of good ideas to try on some of my recent purchases coming from (sometimes seemingly endless) discussions – not a simple yea or nay. Ed:sp

You make good points Hknewman and I can see problems with it as well. A thumbs up might be best. My suggestion was prompted both by the subtle and quick encouragement that members can give to trip reports or other helpful posts, and by the fact that some nasty posts could get enough thumbs down to deter more of the same. Maybe just the "thumbs up" or "thanks" both to threads and individual posts would be more appropriate and less likely to be abused.

    Edited for spelling.
