I am preparing some freezer bag meals for an upcoming thru hike and was wondering if adding peanut butter in with dry ingredients will reduce the shelf life. They wont be consumed for 4 to 5 months. Does anyone have experience with this? I'd really like to avoid dealing with messy containers of PB. Thanks.

Mar 24, 2015 at 3:20 pm #2185655I make a lot of peanut noodles via FBC — I just use the little individual packages of Justin's natural peanut butter. Very little mess, all-natural ingredients, and you don't have to add extra fat (which you would need with the powdered peanut butter). So good!

I really like the simplicity and less trash of having all the ingredients in one bag, and having the ability to easily adjust amounts. So if there is a way to make it work in one bag I would much prefer it. What if the meals were stored in the fridge or freezer before being shipped out? Would I then have to worry about condensation when they are removed? Thanks
Mar 24, 2015 at 10:34 pm #2185780The problem is the PB is a "liquid", so must be kept separate. Now then, as mentioned by another, peanut powder would work (such as PB2). It is defatted peanuts, that are ground up and is dry.

Apr 6, 2015 at 7:03 pm #2189738Powdered Peanut Butter is good stuff. It's basically the solids left over after pressing out the Peanut oil. It has very little fat and keeps well. I regularly add a spoonful to my oatmeal. Since it keeps well, I don't see a problem with premixing it into meals. You should be able to find Bell Plantations PB2 at Walmart, but it is expensive and I don't think that the demand will be there very long. Powdered Peanut Butter is also available from Honeyville Foods, in a No. 10 can. JIF To Go is peanut butter in single serving cups and is probably the best choice for ordinary folks. It keeps well and, at eight 1-1/2 Oz. cups per package, isn't much more expensive than a small jar of peanut butter. Since it is already packaged in sealed cups, I don't mix it in with other foods and usually just keep some in my snack bag.
