Is it ultralight? No
Will I take it backpacking? doubtful
Do I need it? No
Is it cool? heck yeah!So I was killing time at my local Academy during lunch and saw this they had this thing for sell for $14.98. I think that's cheaper than a three pack of mantles for it. Don't know if all Academy store have this on sale, its full price on the website. Seems like a pretty cool little lantern for camping by the car. At 4oz. it's only bearly heavier than my bd headlamp. Hell, I might take it out backpacking.
Thought I'd share.
Mar 16, 2015 at 7:23 pm #2183281We take these on our elk hunts in October – great for camp illumination. Everybody brings their almost empty cannisters – it's a great way to make use of all the fuel.
Mar 16, 2015 at 7:27 pm #2183282Heck yeah it's cool.
Last year I purchased 2 of the Coleman F1's because they were cool. Used one while camping 2 weeks in the Shawnee National Forest, Souther IL.
You'll like yours, I'm sure :)
Mar 16, 2015 at 7:33 pm #2183285An alternative would be the Luci solar-powered lantern (www.mpowerd.com).
For daytime, it has some solar cells and lithium battery, and it has ten LED emitters and reflectors for night, 65 lumens. Mine weighs 3.6 ounces. Eight hours of full charge sun time gets you twelve hours of maximum bright light.

Mar 17, 2015 at 1:59 pm #2183494Holocene, that's a great deal! I wish there was an Academy store around these parts.. You wouldn't want to grab one for me would ya? :)
Thanks!
-jakeMar 17, 2015 at 3:15 pm #2183523Is it cool? Heck yeah! Actually, it's even cooler than you might have thought. 5-6 years ago I picked one up at REI for car camping grins. The piezo immediately went bung, so I returned it. A few months later I was scouring the dregs of the garage sale, and there it was–for just $5! So I bought it again, and I removed the piezo to lighten it up a wee bit.
I noticed that the top of the lantern was flat, so I added some titanium scrap rods to act as "stabilizers."
Stabilize what, you ask?
The lantern puts out quite a bit of heat, you see, and there's no reason to let it go to waste. So why not cook up some soup in a titanium cup? There isn't so much heat that it produces a roaring boil, but just enough to do a slow simmer. Is it cool? Heck yeah!
Mar 17, 2015 at 3:54 pm #2183534I can see If they have any more jake.
Thats awesome Gary.
The peizo does seem to work some of the time. I though about removing it as well.Mar 18, 2015 at 7:53 am #2183694I'm with JHL,
I know it's a lot to ask, but I'd take one also and pay shipping and a little extra if you needed it, I don't have any of these stores near me and $59.99 on the web site is kind of a steep price to pay. Like you, do I need it?, maybe not, but it would sure be handy in my preparedness kit for home, no big deal if there's not any left, and I'll be after JHL.
Thanks, Jack
Mar 18, 2015 at 8:38 am #2183706Great for car/base camping and using up those half-filled canisters.
Mar 19, 2015 at 8:37 am #2184046Holocene, I appreciate it thank you!
Mar 19, 2015 at 10:56 am #2184098Thanks Bob, bought a small solar lantern last night. Neat for motorcycle camping, just needs to be charged before leaving. May get stoned at a Coleman Collectors Gathering though. :)
DuaneMar 19, 2015 at 1:09 pm #2184159The small solar lantern will be fully accepted if you place a Coleman label on it.

I have a case now for either my small Coleman 222A or 222B. Protection, but bulky.

-jakeMar 20, 2015 at 2:39 pm #2184541Should be fixed
Mar 20, 2015 at 6:11 pm #2184610I've never had a stove or lantern whose piezo was worth a darn – I try to buy them without it or remove it. I carry a small sparker as well as mini bic lighter instead.
Mar 20, 2015 at 10:06 pm #2184662My Soto stove's piezo has been utterly reliable. Much to my surprise.
