Manage to mostly finish my quilt. (Just need to add some button snaps) My only regret is cutting the fabric a few inches too short for my liking. It'll work, but I think a couple more inches would had been perfect.
I'm using my Montbell Mirage stuff sack and the quilt comes in lighter than my jacket! This was my first time sewing anything really so I don't think I did terrible. Messed up in a few areas, but isn't falling apart yet so I'll call it good. For more images:

I'm in the process of getting a 20F down base quilt plus lighter synthetic or down overquilt for max versatility, so that I can use the lighter one in summer and warmer fall and spring weather, the heavier base in fall, spring and milder winter and both of them together in colder winter. Trying to figure out which temp rating to aim for for the lighter overquilt – what would you say your quilt is rated to? Will you be using it mostly in Southeast summer conditions?
I would love to make my own couples quilt sometime, so appreciate learning from your project.
Mar 15, 2015 at 1:58 pm #2182903The 2.5oz Apex is supposed to be rated for ~50F. That's my goal for it at least.
I think the Spirit 48 Quilt uses 2.5oz Apex. http://www.mountainlaureldesigns.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=133Enlightened Equipment uses 2.1oz and rates theirs at 50f as well.
Should be a safe bet for me as well since I plan to use a bivy, but I still have my doubts, we'll see. :PI'm going to be using it in mainly in the mountains of Western NC. It can still get very humid and hot here as well. Mid summer, I expect many nights not to get below 60F.
Mar 15, 2015 at 7:59 pm #2183010Looks great! I'm thiking about making a 20-30 degree with some 7.5 apex soon, did you attach anything on the edges to keep it together/attached to your pad towards the top? And, just curious, how tall are you? What length of fabric did you use for the height? I'm 5'8" and wondering if 2 yards would be enough…
Also, go Apps!

Not currently, I do have a draw cord at the time though and want to add some button snaps. 5" 4'
I believe mine came out to 59" or 60". 64" would had been perfect. I'm going to be making another 6.0oz apex quilt to get to 30F in a month or so. If you go with your height for the length it should be good.Mar 22, 2015 at 11:26 am #2184953Rocco,
Are you able to pull the quilt up to your neck? The photo and your notes sort of suggest that you wanted it a few inches longer, but I am not sure if you meant long enough to pull completely over your head in chilly weather or if the quilt was just a tad short. The quilt looks good. I wanted to do a synthetic sleeping bag, buT since I have not sewn anything, I think quilt might be easier for me. I have purchsed the fabric, but I need to order the insulation. For a person 5' 10" tall how much insulation do I order?Even the synthetic is expensive and I don't want to buy too much?
Thanks,
Scott
Mar 22, 2015 at 2:32 pm #2184995Yes, it does get up to my neck, but it's my lower neck. I'd like it to go up to just above my hair line. If you go with the measurements from Enlightened Equipment then you'll be good. Measure the length of the quilt to your height. 70 inches for you. I did 61in and that was my mistake instead of doing 64 inches. For you, I'd say 2 yards of insulation will work and 4 yards of fabric.
What insulation do you plan to use? 2.5oz?
Mar 22, 2015 at 11:20 pm #2185126I want to do the 6 oz Apex, because it is colder where I live. The six ounce is like 18.00 a yard so I want to make sure I have enough but I don't go overboard.
Mar 23, 2015 at 3:38 am #2185140oh, cool! Let us know how that goes. I plan to use that in my second quilt and I'm curious as of the temperature rating. My research leads me to believe upper 20s or around 30F for comfort. 2 Linear yards should be about right for you. will be around 72in x 61 inch.
Mar 23, 2015 at 8:47 am #21851896 oz apex – too heavy, bulky – based on my experience with 4 oz quilt
Do down instead, plus it will last longer. With 6 oz apex, it's so bulky you'll probably compress it too much in pack so it will have even shorter lifetime
Just a thought – 6 oz apex would be good too…
