I was surfing around and ran into a few items at Land's End that might help hikers on on a budget.
I bought one of these Primaloft jackets and will report back on the weight, but for $29 I can wear it around town if it doesn't hit the UL mark

They have a Gore-Tex jacket for $69 too. http://www.landsend.com/pp/PackableGORETEX174Jacket-30845_178015_59.html&CM_MERCH=PAGE_30845
Surf around for fleece, hats, etc, etc.

I'm really interested to hear how these jackets work out. Thanks for bringing them up.
My wallet thanks you too!

Oct 16, 2007 at 7:02 am #1405648I have one of these jackets and although it might not make the cut for lightweight backpacking it is still a nice warm jacket to wear around town. I have not weighed it but I would guess about 20oz., much heavier than my Thermarap or Micro Puff Pullover. It is a more full featured jacket with handwarmer pockets, interior pockets, arm pocket, etc and has a much more durable exterior shell. I would rate its warmth about the same as my Patagonia Micro Puff.

Oct 16, 2007 at 9:29 am #1405674Maybe it's me, but for 20 ounces at only $30, this looks like a great thing for someone new to grab. As was said earlier, it can always serve well for in-town use versus trail use down the road!

Oct 18, 2007 at 6:22 pm #1405975I got my jacket today. The XL size hits the scales at 25 ounces. It's no BMW Cocoon, but still a very useable winter jacket for $29. It does have microfleece-lined hand warmer and outer Napolean pockets with an interior mesh audio-player pocket with a headphone port and a zippered pocket on the other side. The sizing allows for some layering. I would add a waist hem drawstring.
Dec 9, 2007 at 1:01 pm #1411901Thank you for the tip. I've been waiting for the Rab Generator to go on sale & this will tide me over. Also, it will keep me from wearing more fragile & expensive stuff around town. I used a free shipping code too.
