I’m planning on hiking the 100 mile wilderness in late June – starting around June 24. The timing isn’t perfect but fits with my family. I’ll drive to Monson, stay at Shaw’s, get shuttled to the Abol Bridge, and hike back. I typically put in 17-22 miles in Virginia. I’m planning on taking 6 days.
Will it be unbearably buggy? Swampy?
Alternatively, I’m not wedded to the 100 mile wilderness, it just seemed like a good stretch to do. Is there another 100 mile-ish bit of trail that I can drive to from Virginia that people think is better? I am irrationally terrified of heights, so nothing with lots of knife edges, boulders to jump through/over, that sort of thing.
I did it first part of August. No bugs and not swampy at all. It was one of the best parts of the trail to me.
Kathryn, the 100 mile is nice. Baxter its nice too But I would probably do the Whites or southern Maine. Shaws is nice as is the one on the lake. It will be great either way.
Thanks. I don’t actually plan to stay in Baxter at all. I’ve heard the Whites are lovely. Given my tremendous fear of heights (and loathing of rock scrambles), I’m not sure it’s a good choice unless all the descriptions I read are lies. Also, I want to camp outside, away from shelters, and that isn’t allowed along the AT in NH is it?
I’ve heard the 100-ish miles in Maine before the NH border is lovely — why would you do that over the 100 MW? I realize much of what makes that 100 MW appealing (and I know it’s not ‘wilderness’) is that it’s named.
I agree, it’s just a matter of what you like. Southern Maine and the Whites have a higher concentration of high mountains, which I like. You might prefer the lakes, bogs, peaks, and easier trails of the 100 mile. The 100 mile is very nice. I especially liked the blueberries, huckleberries, lakes, and long river walks. I also went in August and there were some bugs but they were bearable.
