Wanting to make a couple of these pouches like the kits RSBTR sells (one for me and one for the wife). I usually keep all my small misc. stuff in a gallon ziplock but they’re failing during my trips and I need the stuff in it to be protected from water. RSBTR sells their kits with Dyneema X but this seems like overkill to me so I was considering using 1.43 CF for weight savings and best water proofness. Think that material will hold up well? It will just have things like med stuff, phone, headlamp, toilet paper, so nothing too pointy. I’m not going to use hybrid cuben as for the weight, I might as well save a lot of $$ and just use either Dyneema or something like HyperD 300 (considered using HyperD in the first place).Thoughts on which direction I should go? I should add that I want to use mine as sort of a pack lid so it will be resting on top of my pack but it shouldn’t see a ton of abrasion up there. If it rains, I’ll either be wearing a poncho over everything or I’ll put the zipper pouch inside the pack in the event I’m wearing my rain jacket.
Jul 7, 2016 at 2:35 pm #3412969I made a simple ”envelope” style pack out of the 1.43osy cuben and I am surprised by its durability. It was used daily for about 3 months and then sparsely for the last three years. Even the roll top part is still water tight despite the constant rolling and unrolling. I would use it for your little pouch application without hesitation.
I hope this helps!
Cheers
Jul 7, 2016 at 7:22 pm #3413009My .51 cuben stuff sacks are still going strong after about 800 miles…despite being packed/unpacked daily on trips! Â If you’re really concerned about weight, though, I would avoid using a zipper entirely. Â Zippers are heavy. Â Maybe a simple roll-top with a 1/2″ fastex buckle, or even just a velcro closure…
Jul 7, 2016 at 7:22 pm #3413010Thanks, that definitely gives me some reassurance. With so little material being needed, weight is not a HUGE concern but lighter is always better if possible. Any reason why someone might prefer a woven fabric like Dyneema X in this case rather than cuben?
Jul 7, 2016 at 7:26 pm #3413012This will only use a roughly 12″ piece of uretek so I’m only looking at ~.3oz for the zipper. Also, for it to be water resistant is would have to be roll top and by the time O put in something to stiffen it and add clips, I’m certain it will save no weight over the zipper. I have made roll tops but this zip sack is going to serve as convenient storage for my small items so the zipper really makes it so.

A: $$$. Â Cuben is expensive!
Jul 8, 2016 at 11:02 am #3413123That’s the truth. That’s why I have yet to use it for any MYOG gear! But…I really want to get my feet wet with working with the stuff and think this might be the perfect project for doing so. Going to pull the trigger on the cuben now. Thanks!
