Maybe they would be more popular if they roared, were more complex, more expensive, used a more expensive fuel, or had more problems. But alcohol stoves are simple, quiet, lightweight, and reliable, and don't get all that much attention - except by ultralight backpackers, who happen to like those attributes a lot.
Backpacking Light rounded up 13 alcohol stoves that are available for purchase, tested them under standardized conditions (calm and 12 mph wind), and then tested them in the field.
