Anybody seen these?
Apr 13, 2009 at 7:22 pm #1493786I think a group buy is in order! If she can make them with the AT maps on them, they'll be as effective as those AT trail map bandannas.
Apr 13, 2009 at 7:26 pm #1493790Hey Chris, neat stuff, I like that it has a hood.
If it's just a tyvek jacket you are after, you could also look at Yanks. It doesn't have a hood, or the cool graphics but they are 10 bucks and my size large weighs 3.52 oz.
Apr 13, 2009 at 8:50 pm #1493809I'd like to see a series of the Tyvek Hoodies offered with all the major long distance trail maps. Maybe a moveable panel on the back that says, in 3" letters,: HIKER TO TRAIL. And, with a flip of the wrist and the tack of some Velcro, HIKER TO TOWN. It ought to be offered with a set of 12 permanent, variously colored, "Sharpies". Large areas should be left bare, for autographing, etc. by the aforementioned "Sharpies", in a new UltraLight body, the complete set only weighing 2.5 ounces, and being stored in an inside, zippered pocket.

Locale: Founder & Lead Moderator, https://www.facebook.com/groups/SierraNorthPCThikersThis is really cool, I wonder if it is (a) more breathable than dri ducks, and (b) if it holds up great in a downpour.
Apr 13, 2009 at 9:23 pm #1493819I've been curious on the breathe-ability and how well it will hold up to actual rain. I need lighter rain gear…
Apr 14, 2009 at 4:06 am #1493841I have a few jackets but I haven't tried them out in the winter because the weather can be pretty ugly here and I don't trust Tyvek enough.
But in the summer, I guess I'll take them with me.

Locale: Founder & Lead Moderator, https://www.facebook.com/groups/SierraNorthPCThikersI contacted the vendor with some questions about waterproofness, breathability and sizing – their reply:
Terri to me,
About our tyvek jackets –
They are water and wind resistant but they are not noted for their breathability. The jackets are made of Dupont Tyvek, the same product they wrap houses in before adding the siding.
Here are the approximate size dimensions-
L – armpit to armpit 25", waist 24 1/2", length 27", sleeve length 25", for chest size 38 – 41"
XL – armpit to armpit 25 1/2", waist 25 1/2", length 28", sleeve length 25", for chest size 42 – 45
XXL – armpit to armpit 27", waist 29", length 28", sleeve length 25", for chest size 46 – 49
The XXL jackets have mesh fabric at the side seams to allow for the bigger size. The waist size is from seam to seam, not circumference, so just double it. Sleeve length is measured from shoulder seam (where the sleeve is sewn in) down to the hem at the wrist.
Hope that answers your questions.
Have a great day,
TerriTerri Beaudoin

ps. I measured 3 jackets your way. From the neck/hood seam down to the end of the sleeve.
L – 33 1/4 "
XL – 34 1/4 "
XXL – 34 3/4 "Hope that answers your question.

Locale: Founder & Lead Moderator, https://www.facebook.com/groups/SierraNorthPCThikersYou're right the sizes are absurdly small. I've replied asking for further clarification – will update when I get answers.
ps. I updated original post with clarifications of the measuresments.
Apr 14, 2009 at 1:51 pm #1493968Steven,
I don't know Yanks and couldn't find anything via Google. Is it an outfitter?Apr 14, 2009 at 2:10 pm #1493981Roleigh MartinBPL Member@marti124
Locale: Founder & Lead Moderator, https://www.facebook.com/groups/SierraNorthPCThikersI updated the sizing information of the tyvek jackets and edited original posts above. I too could not find anything about the Yanks Tyvek jacket via google.
Apr 14, 2009 at 2:29 pm #1493987Sizing makes more sense now.
Apr 14, 2009 at 4:25 pm #1494013Chris,
You could try:
http://www.protective-clothing.net/
I've tried these several years ago and found them to be water resistant, but they need to be seam sealed which I forgot to do.
I think these are like the ones mention at Yanks where ever that is.

Apr 15, 2009 at 9:11 am #1494224I got my Yankz jacket form here a couple of years back http://www.sportshell.com/
I have 2 types of those jackets (with nice cuffs and w/o). And I also have the pants. They are a very soft tyvek. They feel nice on the skin. Nice lightweight. The seams haven’t leaked on me yet in a steady rain. But I have not used them in a downpour yet.
However, for me, they don’t breathe well at all. I would not wear them at all above 60F. With any backpacking, I start sweating in them.
I breath much better in my O2 jacket. Sometimes I backpack w/ a one dollar 2oz poncho; still I use the O2 the most.
All in all, I use Yankz for non-backpacking in 50-60F weather. It’s a neat jacket with a statement to it (whatever that is :)).
Other backpackers have been fine in the Yankz, so it’s a hyoh.

Sounds like a great recipe for moisture both inside and out! No thanks, but I respect Terri's honesty — as it helps people decide appropriately — unlike many mainstream gearmakers that hype up their gear.
Apr 15, 2009 at 12:37 pm #1494282Like Barry, I bought mine at http://www.sportshell.com
I bought both med and large because I wasn't sure what size would fit. I'm 6'3" and the large just barely fits me. I haven't used it in any type of downpour or when it is hot out so I can't comment on waterproofness or breathability. They're 10 buckaroos and 2 bucks for shipping so you really can't go wrong. :)
Apr 15, 2009 at 1:08 pm #1494289Those jackets were in fashion a few years ago. I have seen people wearing them out around town. Favored by women of a certain age. I have always wanted one myself. Now that they've become hiker chic, and not just Sunday brunch chic, maybe it's time.

Locale: Founder & Lead Moderator, https://www.facebook.com/groups/SierraNorthPCThikersMark, thanks for link for http://www.protective-clothing.net/
I see they sell hoods, which you'd need to order if you got their jacket as the jacket does not include a hood, right?
Very affordable. Are the jackets 100% tyvek, it doesn't say for sure on the web page (see http://www.protective-clothing.net/sheddable_shells.html ). Also, why did you only try it a few years ago, what did you switch to and why?
Thanks.

Ok, thanks. Here it is: Yankz NON-Tyvek jackets

Locale: Founder & Lead Moderator, https://www.facebook.com/groups/SierraNorthPCThikersChris, are you sure that is Tyvek, it doesn't say (on that page), it shows the Tyvek jacket at the bottom of your linked page:
Tyvek Sport Shell™ Jacket
Apr 15, 2009 at 3:56 pm #1494339I actually bought a Tyvek coverall from OSH hardware store. I have never gotten rained on while wearing it. I did wear it when it looked like it would rain, and then it snowed instead. The pant legs abraded rather quickly, but the top half is fine. Anyway, I can't say whether they are truly water proof or not. I suspect that they can handle a light spray but nothing serious.

Locale: Founder & Lead Moderator, https://www.facebook.com/groups/SierraNorthPCThikersI looked at their "about page" and it says the jackets not labeled "tyvek" are "Sport Shells Jackets and Pants by Yankz are made from a poly-spun blend of Polyethylene and Polypropylene. This high-tech fabric provides a durable and ultra-light outer layer of protection. This material creates Jackets and Pants that are Water-Resistant, Wind-Proof and that keep you as warm as a Fleece or Sweats. At $10 a piece or $15 for a Pants-Jacket combo pack, Sport Shell Jackets and Pants are a high-value product for the outdoor enthusiast who seeks to continue to perform even when the weather creates additional challenges. At about 4 ounces a piece, Sport Shell Jackets and Pants are also very light and fold very small making them very compact and therefore very easy to use, store and carry."
It also says the tyvek jackets are only in size XXL and XXXL as they are no longer being "made" or sold by them.
Apr 15, 2009 at 4:16 pm #1494350Hell, I didn't even bother to look that closely.
They look just like Tyvek to me, and the weight seemed about right, and a couple of the guys mentioned they got them there, so I just skimmed right through. Good catch.
You reckon it could be a non-licensed generic tyvek-type material?
I too have used some tyvek clothing. In my case it was the one piece spray suit/laboratory looking thing w/ hood. They are thin, weak and not waterproof. I used them as a one time use suit to keep sand out of (everywhere!) when sandblasting. Have done this in 100+ deg heat, with a sandblast hood and dust mask on. Nearly passed out.
