We promote multi-day, backcountry travel in a self-supported (“backpackable”), lightweight style. – Backpacking Light Mission Statement
What is Backpacking Light?
Backpacking Light provides information and education about hiking and backpacking, and hosts the world’s most passionate community of people dedicated to traveling light.
Would You Like to Be a Part of Our Community?
We’d love that!
We started Backpacking Light in our garage in 2001, have employed mostly friends and family, let people bring their dogs and babies to work, and remain committed to owning a company that values community – and a passion for restoring their soul outside.
We welcome your experience, your participation in our community, and of course, the opportunity to serve and help you as well.
Please subscribe today and support our community’s efforts to help people enjoy a less burdened life in the wilderness – and beyond.
Godspeed and Go Light,
Ryan and Stephanie Jordan

How is Backpacking Light Different from Other Magazines and Websites?
Backpacking Light publishes comprehensive gear reviews that are critical, honest, and founded on both sound technical analysis and rigorous field use.
In its most distilled form, the answer to that question is simple: we question everything. From the marketing claims we find on hang tags to the (sometimes outrageous) recommendations we read in other outdoor magazines, we are skeptics at heart. We believe in the intelligence of the consumer – you – and prefer to educate you by delivering sound, judgment-based, and evidence-based information rather than capitalizing on gullibility and feeding you a shallow stream of consciousness that will only satisfy you when you get bored of reading SkyMall on your next flight.
Backpacking Light promotes a passionate and respectful community of members.
Everyone is welcome here. Except for people that don’t play nice, and don’t respect each other. We believe that the real value of the Internet is in fostering community in a way that helps, and not hurts, society. Trolls, spammers, fools, bigots, and idiots are aggressively moderated in our forums so the rest of us can actually learn from, and encourage each other.
