There is nothing worse than getting sick while out walking, and one cause is contaminated water. Because of this threat, most hikers carry some method for purifying water. There are four common ways used to convert water of doubtful quality into something you can safely drink - or to make those bugs harmless. Boiling takes a lot of time and fuel, and leaves water hot or tasting 'flat.' Filtering does not take out the very smallest viruses. Chemical treatments, the choice of many modern ultralight hikers, may not be effective if users comply with the short exposure times recommended by the manufacturers. An old technology, UV purification, is making inroads into the ultralight hiking community. UV purification devices are fast, effective, and they're getting lighter.
