Feel free to add. Bet we can go like The Carbon Flame War. But there is no gun issue. Let’s be clear on that.Nov 16, 2017 at 1:00 am #3502337

I think Ken’s point is that the gunman was wacko, was banned from owning guns, and ‘manufactured’ his guns himself. So more stringent gun laws wouldn’t have stopped him. I may be reading too much into Ken’s ‘guns are not an issue’ statement.
I would like to know more about his ‘manufacturing’ his guns. Can you turn a hunting rifle into a semi-automatic? I have no idea. I doubt that he built his guns from scratch.
All of the recent slaughters were committed by people using store bought semi automatics. This may be the first time I’ve heard of a shooter making his own guns. So it’s an outlier. I’ve always said that banning these guns wouldn’t mean an immediate end to gun massacres, any more than drunk driving laws end drunk driving (an imperfect analogy). What doesn’t follow is, ‘see, this guy shot people anyway; laws don’t work; there’s no need for more stringent laws’.Nov 16, 2017 at 5:39 pm #3502415
can you order gun parts without any background check, then assemble them yourself?
Maybe Ken just doesn’t want another pointless unsolvable argument about gun regulations : )
If we wanted to do something to reduce gun deaths, there should be a commission headed by the FBI or someone, look at each incident, identify solutions that would reduce future deaths
Sort of like how they analyze airplane crashes and implement fixes so that type of accident doesn’t occur again. Airplanes are very safe as a result.Nov 16, 2017 at 5:59 pm #3502419

Sounds like the Sheriff refused to put much effort in to arrest this man even tho he wasn’t supposed to possess guns or ammo and tho he knew the man was out shooting many times. Near the neighbors he eventually killed.
A bit of research will show how easy it is to make guns. Google

How easy is it if they stopped selling parts on line? Haven’t heard of any mass murderer using a shovel gun….Nov 17, 2017 at 6:56 pm #3502654
Well, at least California has already passed a law requiring self made guns to have a serial number given to them by the state and registered and a background check done.
Imagine the damage this guy could have done if not for those laws.
What? Wait,Nov 17, 2017 at 7:05 pm #3502659
The Paris Attacks used AK’s, 130 people. They may have been made from shovels,

Well maybe I’m a gun enthusiast after all. this is Emily Dickinson, said to be writing about rage.
My Life had stood – a Loaded Gun –
In Corners – till a Day
The Owner passed – identified –
And carried Me away –
And now We roam in Sovereign Woods –
And now We hunt the Doe –
And every time I speak for Him –
The Mountains straight reply –
And do I smile, such cordial light
Upon the Valley glow –
It is as a Vesuvian face
Had let its pleasure through –
And when at Night – Our good Day done –
I guard My Master’s Head –
‘Tis better than the Eider-Duck’s
Deep Pillow – to have shared –
To foe of His – I’m deadly foe –
None stir the second time –
On whom I lay a Yellow Eye –
Or an emphatic Thumb –
Though I than He – may longer live
He longer must – than I –
For I have but the power to kill,
Without–the power to die–
My take on the paradoxical last lines is this: Dickinson’s anger is acted out in the gun, where she gets revenge–has the power to kill her adversaries (and even herself? the ‘doe’ that the gun shoots?)–but that same revenge hasn’t the power to die; that is, the impulse for revenge is never satisfied in any act, but lives on. This is why a mass slaughter is such a futile act: all those people killed, so much revenge taken, so much anger…that isn’t purged. The killer dies without the satisfaction of having taken revenge. All he’s done is pass the desire for revenge on to the victims–the surviving friends and families–that he’s created. That’s why revenge has the “power to kill/ Without the power to die.”

Nice videos David
The first one – not very sophisticated tools or anything. A press with a car jack. I liked those miniature anvil like things. Heat treating with a torch and plunging into water.
Still, most people would not be able to make their own gun. That guy was pretty skilled. If you required all guns and gun parts require a background check, and we firmed up that process, there would probably be fewer gun deaths. They should look at the data to see if it’s effective and quit those regulations that aren’t.Nov 24, 2017 at 6:12 pm #3503872

Deer hunting with a pistol?
Look, the guy is probably devastated. It’s just, even if it was a deer…just pull out a pistol and shoot in the dark? Wound it?
What do I know.
