    Hi,

I am planning on having a friend sew me a simple pouch to carry my Ruta Locura Titanium Grill. I think we will be using Dyneema x, what thread should we be using and are there any special considerations that she should know about when working with this material?

    Thanks,

    David

I’ve had good experience with Gutterman TERA 80 on a wide variety of fabrics and it works fine on 200d fabric like the Dyneema X.  You probably wouldn’t want to use anything lighter than this,  but unless your friend is using an industrial machine (or knows otherwise) I would also stay away from the really heavy threads like a TERA 40 or DB-92.  These threads are very strong and appropriate for heavy duty fabrics, but they’ll jam up most home machines, or you’ll never get the tension right.

I wouldn’t say there’s any special considerations sewing Dyneema X, just be sure to use sharp scissors or a roll cutter to get through the grids.

Dynema would be good for a pack that has to be durable

For a grill pouch, lighter weight fabric would be fine.  Like any lightweight silnylon or silpoly.

Since the surface area of the pouch is small, it doesn’t make that much difference how light or heavy the fabric is.

@Aaron, thanks for that information! I will be asking you questions very soon here since I am working with new fabrics, new stitches etc.

Sure, no problem.  I’ve just been learning through trial and error myself.  I sewed my first silnylon tarp years ago for a PCT hike (the stitching was terrible, but it worked).  It’s only been the last year or two that I’ve been trying my hand at more complicated stuff like backpacks and clothing.  I’d call myself a novice, but I might have some more tips.
