FYI: We are performing a planned maintenance upgrade on our server this afternoon, and expect the site to be down for a little bit – on the order of several minutes to an hour or two.
Aug 29, 2020 at 2:19 pm #3673705We have completed today’s update. This is a completely reconfigured server, and although we’ve run through all of our standard checks, I’m expecting a hiccup or two once site traffic spins back up for the day. If you notice anything weird going on with the site, please reply to this forum thread if possible.

Some posts have gone missing from the “Tarp Material Resistant to Hail…” thread. I don’t know if it’s connected.
Aug 29, 2020 at 3:15 pm #3673713It’s quite possible that they are related. If anyone has email notifications for the missing posts so I can see timestamps that would be helpful, you can forward them to [email protected]
Aug 29, 2020 at 11:50 pm #3673819Some older stories have every follow-up post in the first page marked:
This reply has been reported for inappropriate content.
I’ve seen the occasional post (accidentally?) flagged, but not a whole page.
Examples:
https://backpackinglight.com/satellite_communications_sotmr_part2/
https://backpackinglight.com/satellite_communications_sotmr_part3/
https://backpackinglight.com/backpacking-with-voice-recorder-sanders/
https://backpackinglight.com/backpacking-with-thermometer-sanders/
https://backpackinglight.com/backpacking-scissors-reviews-sotmr/
Stumbled across this while looking up something I wrote years ago, so checked others. Yet some of my old stories don’t have this problem.

Aug 30, 2020 at 12:36 pm #3673892Not sure if this is jut affecting me or not, but the BPL homepage has been unavailable all morning (and still is from less than a minute ago). It leads me to the ever present OMG page. The only way I’ve been able to sign in is by going to a thread and signing in from there.
Aug 30, 2020 at 12:41 pm #3673895@rex: Additionally, if you, say, click on the number on the right of someone’s post, which takes you to the thread without the story above it, the entire thread has been reported for inappropriate content, and the thread is locked not allowing any comments.
Aug 30, 2020 at 1:55 pm #3673914@Rex – the reported forum thread issue is known and wasn’t related to yesterday. That’s actually a database maintenance task we need to perform, and we had it on hold until the server update yesterday. There are a total of about 300 threads that are locked down by this.
@doug-i – the BPL homepage issue – see your email for more info, but a few other’s may see this as well for 24-48 hours. It’s a result of your ISP caching parts of the old site (some stylesheets and content) while delivering parts of the new. It should resolve by tomorrow. If not, reply back here.
@areality – thanks for sending those notifications. Very helpful. Yes, unfortunately those posts were lost. AFAIK they were the only ones.Aug 31, 2020 at 8:35 pm #3674133OK, most issues should have been resolved by now.
We moved the site to its new production server in preparation for the rest of the site upgrade.
Performance, in general, should be a bit faster. Most pages are loading in just a few seconds, and posting new topics and new replies in the forums is much, much faster.
Sep 1, 2020 at 11:51 am #3674217I’m not finding that starting a new thread is faster at all, it still takes quite a long time from when I hit submit until it finally posts.
Also, still getting the OMG page when I go to BPL’s homepage, FWIW. Still not a big issue for me though as the sign-in link generally still works.
