I could care less either way.
I don’t understand the purpose of them though. What might be useful is a link to the most helpful posts listed in order of the number of helpful clicks. Of course, someone will figure out a way to kink it.
I was going to say the same thing. This thread has the highest use of the helpful/not helpful buttons. Personally, I like them because they are potentially useful and I can ignore them if I want. It simply doesn’t bother me at all. In the future, there might be a function to search for the most helpful posts about a particular piece of gear or a trip itinerary recommendation without having to wade through all the “me too” chaff. BPL isn’t becoming Facebook but threads like this make it so.
Now, I’m going to get back to my regularly scheduled hiking.
It would be easier if we just started posting everything in gear swap so everything is in one place and sorted by date. That would also address the issue of telling people they posted in the wrong spot.
The original idea behind the Helpful/Not Helpful buttons was two-fold:
1. To increase self-moderation of the forums by discouraging posts that were inconsistent with our Forum Guidelines.
2. To provide a tool for moderators to identify posts that potentially violated our Forum Guidelines.
Today, we installed the REPORT button which can now be used to report posts that are inconsistent with our forum guidelines, so the benefit of a Dislike button for reason #2 is now obsolete.
Unfortunately, the Dislike button has been abused by some. You can’t systematically see the abuse, but I can with the behind the scenes admin reports. As the OP of this thread indicated, this button has not been used responsibly, and it’s clear that some people have used it as a blatant personal attack against forum users. Some users seem unable to distinguish the content of a post from how they feel about a person.
Every user here is a person and nobody deserves that sort of systematic judgment.
The Dislike button has been canned, as have the labels of helpful/not helpful.
Instead, if you like the post for any reason, just give the author a thumbs up. It’ll be good for both of you.
