Ditch these please.. They’re not helpful. How can a trip announcement be unhelpful? Or an honest answer? Apparently the children here can’t be trusted to use them responsibly. Just fosters bad feelings. My 2 cents… Watch this get marked as unhelpful without a good response. How does that help anything?
Edit: Changed my title here too, without a response.
Dec 5, 2015 at 4:27 pm #3368814+1, if we can’t have the community building option of only “thumbs up” votes…
Dec 5, 2015 at 7:23 pm #3368838Agreed. I think one of the original suggestions was to have a “like” button for trip reports. That way readers could show they read it and appreciated the effort it took to post it even if they didn’t have specific comments. This would help encourage people to post. But I really don’t understand the usefulness of all the “not helpful” clicks you have gotten in trip announcements. And over in Chaff does “not helpful” mean “don’t agree”? They aren’t the same thing.
Dec 5, 2015 at 8:13 pm #3368843Agreed. Having a “+1”, “upvote”, or “helpful” button is fine. Not particularly useful most of the time, but sometimes it’s nice to get some affirmation that people read and appreciated what you had to offer.
The “not helpful” button, on the other hand, can cause nothing but pain and misery. Shoot it and toss it in a ditch.
Dec 6, 2015 at 1:27 am #3368880Agree agree agree agree. Even the forum’s atmosphere is tarnished by these buttons; whenever I want to write a reply they are there in my face, sitting in the preceding post, exerting the pressure “BE HELPFUL OR ELSE”…………… Yikes!

I gave you a not helpful because Santa made me do it.Dec 6, 2015 at 2:17 am #3368885Feel free :D I just gave myself not helpful, just in case, because you know, you never know…….
Dec 6, 2015 at 4:14 am #3368894If people who feel compelled to point out posts they think should have been posted on a different sub-forum got lots of “unhelpful” votes, would they do it less? Or who rehash gripes about BPL whether it’s relevant or not? If so, “unhelpful” votes would be, well, helpful. But do those people so enjoy being self-appointed guardians of the BPL Galaxy, that they’d listen?
Dec 6, 2015 at 9:21 am #3368921I’m a fan of this feature. I’d request that it not be taken away. I’m fully aware that by posting this, it may be marked as helpful or unhelpful. And that doesn’t really bother me.
Dec 6, 2015 at 10:24 am #3368938I’d like a funny, wrong, and BS button. Maybe we need more options.
Dec 6, 2015 at 12:41 pm #3368964I thought Cameron’s comment was the most interesting one.
Cheers
Dec 6, 2015 at 2:49 pm #3368988Interesting, innovative, inspiring, disagree, troll … there could be a variety of canned responses that don’t take a post.
But, if people are greasemonkeying users on every post they make, maybe only postitive feedback is good. Let’s people show appreciation for the post when there doesn’t seem to be a need to respond.
Someone could declare a thread as their journal, where the intention is they post, others read but don’t post because it’s not a discussion thread per se. I could see a list of canned responses providing a motivation to share, without cluttering a personal log.
Dec 6, 2015 at 4:01 pm #3369002Please don’t turn BPL into an outdoor version of Facebook.
GET RID OF THIS FEATURE
Dec 6, 2015 at 6:33 pm #3369036Looking at this thread shows the buttons being used as more of an agree/disagree feature. If you agree there isn’t always a lot to be said. But if you disagree and don’t say why it does nothing to further the conversation. For all the “not helpful” clicks here, Kelly is the only one who has straight out said he likes the feature (earning a “helpful” from me even though I disagree). It is hard to say what all the clicks mean. Of course if we had Cayenne’s BS button available it could simplify things, and be incredibly useful over in Chaff.
Dec 6, 2015 at 7:49 pm #3369051I think the best use for the thumbs-down feature would be thus:
have the numbers hidden from all but admin,
have the website indicate to admin when a specific post has gotten x# of down-votes.In this way, it can be used as a quasi reporting system.
Dec 6, 2015 at 9:20 pm #3369067Like Big Brother. No thanks.
Dec 7, 2015 at 4:57 am #3369092Life’s too short to waste time on this stuff. Just use your ad blocker, firewall, or hosts file to nuke likebtn.com and none of it will sully your own view of BPL. I don’t really give a hoot if others choose to play with the silly things.
Dec 7, 2015 at 5:09 pm #3369246have the numbers hidden from all but admin,

The problem is there’s a big difference between the things that people will downvote and the things that should be reported. If this forum is anything like every other forum on the internet, posting an unpopular opinion, even in a perfectly respectful way, is likely to get lots of “unhelpful” votes. Automatically notifying mods of those posts will just waste their time.
If we need a reporting system, we can implement an actual reporting system. There’s no point messing around with a quasi- one.
Dec 7, 2015 at 9:00 pm #3369306Thanks for the reminder Michael. AdBlock is your friend on BPL. No ads, no buttons, no seeing avatars that you don’t like. So much better.
Dec 10, 2015 at 10:03 pm #3369940I like the buttons
Dec 17, 2015 at 6:08 pm #3370998Maybe we should have to include our names/avatar identity when we click the helpful/not helpful buttons.
this might stop someone with a grudge from clicking ‘not helpful’ on every post by one individual, no matter what.
I think that we should be able to stand by our ‘not helpful’ clicks especially.

Feb 5, 2016 at 3:34 pm #3380434Jesus christ. This does not make sense. Almost nobody wants the buttons. Why are they still here?
Though from all the down voting in this thread, it seems as though a lot of non contributing forum members like the buttons. But since they aren’t contributing, who cares about what these ghosts want?
Feb 5, 2016 at 4:16 pm #3380447They probably contribute to the recent threads via gear swap, further reducing forum discussions.
Feb 5, 2016 at 4:28 pm #3380453Not a scientific study, but
I glanced at a couple other threads, helpful and not helpful not clicked by anyone hardly at all
this thread – many helpful and not helpful clicks
only Peter’s post nobody clicked helpful or not helpful
anyone?
edit: oh, nobody has clicked helpful or not helpful for my post
