8:30 MST- clicking on recent topics yields this
OMG OUR GPS JUST TOLD YOU HOW TO GET LOST, UGH!
especially frustrating as we still can’t simply click on our email with subscribed topics!
maybe hire out another firm that does the web work? it’s been a couple of weeks of back & forth on the recent topics and a couple of weeks of clicking on the email notificationsJul 12, 2020 at 12:01 pm #3657754Rene RavenelBPL Member
They’ve already done that. More then once.
BPL needs a new head of engineering.
Ryan’s expertise lies in outdoor activity, not web development. The best thing Ryan could do to benefit site administration is step back and let some one else shine in this particular spotlight.Jul 12, 2020 at 12:05 pm #3657755Mike MBPL Member
well it’s up and running again- recent topics (email notifications still not working however)Jul 12, 2020 at 7:46 pm #3657828PedestrianBPL Member
What’s worse than all the bugs across the site is the utter lack of any “official” response!
I think it’s high time Ryan Jordan stepped forward and offered a timeline for resolving the many “OMG OUR GPS JUST TOLD YOU HOW TO GET LOST, UGH!” bugs.
If I started to enumerate them it would probably take me a couple of hours.
The issue has been reported (by many others and by me) a number of times already but there has been no resolution to date. Worse yet there’s never any communication on the status of these ongoing issues.
Hopefully this thread won’t be deleted or “locked” to shut down any discussion among the BPL customer community.Jul 12, 2020 at 9:50 pm #3657903Ken ThompsonBPL Member
@hereLocale: Right there
“maybe hire out another firm that does the web work? it’s been a couple of weeks of back & forth on the recent topics and a couple of weeks of clicking on the email notifications”
Please. And Mike is kind. It has been years of unresolved here with this latest iteration of the site. Changes made at a snails pace.

Mike, yes, this particular bug is VERY frustrating.
This bug report has been documented, and will be updated, in BPLTrac here: https://trello.com/c/9AkYh8p3
It’s a high priority issue right now.
I also want to note that although the effect is the same (broken links), the cause between the issue reported by Mike on Sunday and all other previous reports of this issue are different.
Previously, links were broken when certain plugins were updated, and the maintenance developer did not adequately review and test the update using what are known as visual regression techniques that would have detected these types of broken links. We are working with our current support agency to ensure that this testing is in place as standard protocol when they perform updates.
Sunday’s issue is something entirely different, and we are investigating it on multiple fronts with multiple developers (plugin developers, our hosting agency, and our support agency).
See the link for full documentation and updates about what’s going on with this issue.
I will be updating the issue in the morning after we review the nightly logs from the server.
- Mike – the email link issue is known and has been documented here. I’m waiting for the developer who is best able to tackle this one to get back from traveling. I’ve requested a proposal from him to investigate and fix ASAP.
- Here’s some insight into the process by which bugs are prioritized and resolved. You can always take a look at the List “This Month’s Projects” at BPLTrac to see what we’re actively working on at any given time.
Thanks for your patience, both of these current issues (recurring broken links and email links) are relatively complicated to diagnose and resolve, and expensive.Jul 14, 2020 at 12:21 pm #3664195
Update: after reviewing the server logs this morning, the server remained stable overnight with no issues. We plan to keep the monitoring tools activated for an additional 6 days to see if this bug pops up again in the absence of routine plugin updates.
That said, I would expect that you will see this issue in response to plugin updates again. There’s always a time delay between an update and resetting the broken links because several tests have to be performed before links are reset. We are trying to make this process as short as possible and to reduce the frequency of performing these types of updates to once every couple of weeks.Jul 17, 2020 at 9:38 am #3664879
So far so good, no issues to report this week. Our tests and logs suggest that this issue popped up as a result of out-of-sync caching processes between our CDN and your browser caches that may have occurred during one of the updates we recently performed late last week. When we reset all of the caches on our end, everything seemed to have returned to normal, so closing this thread.Aug 1, 2020 at 7:21 am #3667853
