Wondering if there is anyone with a Spot 2 who wouldn't mind me borrowing it or renting it out to me for a solo trip I have coming up. If I have a spot, the wife lets me go solo. I'll be doing the Rae Lakes Loop from 8/29 to 9/2. I'd be happy to cover shipping costs.Jul 30, 2013 at 7:22 pm #2011045
Someone on gear swap was selling their spot 2 with an active plan a couple days. Here is the link:Jul 30, 2013 at 7:40 pm #2011052
Thanks for the heads up. A little more than I'm hoping to spend right now.Aug 2, 2013 at 3:46 pm #2011792
Still interested in borrowing/renting a spot 2 if there is one available over Labor Day weekend.Aug 2, 2013 at 3:51 pm #2011794

Loaning a Spot might be tricky since there is a big liability issue (if you happen to hit the emergency button). How about renting a Satellite phone? These are generally available (but not cheap).Aug 2, 2013 at 5:39 pm #2011819

There are a few places that rent SPOTs — here's a link to one, the others you can google: http://www.lowergear.com/product.php?id=261. And the Rae Lakes Loop is gorgeous — maybe the wife should go, too! ;~)Aug 2, 2013 at 6:14 pm #2011838
Here's my Spot. I cancelled the service last winter. When it didn't go through after I'd told my wife I would send her an "All OK" message, she panicked. When I told her I wouldn't, then did, she'd panic. Naturally your wife would never do this!
So I just got a PLB, and won't try to message her!
You can "rent" mine for the rest of your life for $25. $20 if you come pick it up! (I'm up by the 5 and the 91.)
PM me if interested.Aug 2, 2013 at 6:16 pm #2011839
I'll even throw in some new lithium batteries!Aug 2, 2013 at 6:54 pm #2011853

I've got a PLB I'll sell you. ACR 406 Terrafix. I just want it outa the house. I have a different model now. I can't go without it per my wife. Your wife may appreciate knowing you have one too.Aug 2, 2013 at 8:17 pm #2011878
Reggie…I'm very interested in your PLB but don't know much about them. Do you need to pay a yearly fee like you do with spot?
I have a 3 night trip in the Emigrant Wilderness coming up on the 12th with my 12 year old son (he has cancer)so I want to make sure we're in contact with the outside world. Can you fill me in a little more on how they work and how much you want for it?

Strictly a "Come and Get Me" device that sends your location to a "rescue center".
No "I'm OK".
No "Go to Plan B"
There is no subscription fee.Aug 2, 2013 at 8:47 pm #2011882
Come and get need is all I'm looking for. What are you asking for it?Aug 2, 2013 at 9:03 pm #2011883
Not trying to hijack the OP. I'd be interested only if the op isn't.
Thanks guysAug 2, 2013 at 9:56 pm #2011892
Bryan, go ahead. I'm really trying to find the cheapest option right now. I only do about one solo trip a year, which doesn't make a spot subscription really worth it. I've been borrowing/renting once a year, but I wonder if in the long term it might be easier and cheaper to just invest in a PLB. While the wife likes the check-in feature of spot, I'd prefer here not to rely on it in case it doesn't end up working as was Stephen's experience.Aug 2, 2013 at 10:05 pm #2011893
Dang! I shouldn't have told you my sad tale! But I wouldn't want your wife to go through what she did, nor you to go through what I did when I got home! ;)
Okay, who wants it? I'm done with the Spot, and if anyone wants it, heck just for the cost of shipping, you can have it!Aug 3, 2013 at 4:14 am #2011923

I replied to Bryan in a PM. My ACR Terrafix 406 cost almost $500 new. I'd like 20% of that or $100. It's in great shape as I've luckily never had to activate it. (Came close once tho).
No subscription. Just register with NOAA so they know who they are coming to rescue.Aug 3, 2013 at 8:40 am #2011945

Stephen- ill take that Spot. Going to do a section hike and my wife will be happy. I was going to do without, but I can't argue with that price. Email me: mediadork at gmail
