I received the new Mora Robust model knife last week. It is about the same blade profile as the Mora Companion, but has a thicker 0.125" blade vs the 0.098" blade on the Companion. The blade is 4" long. I gather it was made in response to the bushcraft market, which has to be a strong player in Mora knife sales and from what I can tell, is offered only in carbon steel, which is also a preference for most bushcrafters. The handle is about 1/8" deeper than the Companion but the same thickness. The sheath has a button on it to mount another knife with the Mora style button opening in the back of the belt loop. I'll probably trim that button off— I'd like to get a Kydex sheath set up for left hand carry.
I'd love to see this offered in stainless for use around salt water. With minimal care, carbon steel would be fine for trail use and is easier to sharpen. Mine came out of the box shaving sharp. It was about $15 online and weighs 4.8oz with the sheath.
It looks like a good compromise with added strength while keeping with the inexpensive and utilitarian aspects of the Mora knives. This would be excellent for food prep, cleaning fish, general repairs and camp stuff, as well as whittling and bushcraft projects.
The Robust comes with the spine of the blade in rough condition like many of the Mora work knives. I have one of the newer Companion MG stainless models that comes with the spine nicely finished, so I thought I would clean up the Robust a little more. I took some before and after photos alongside the Companion so you can see the blade thickness in comparison. The Companion blade thickness is 0.98" which was still an improvement over the older Craftsman and Clipper blades that were 0.76"-0.79" thick. The Robust is 0.125" (1/8").

The Robust is on the top and you can see the rough finish on the spine.

Jul 7, 2012 at 10:24 am #1892842Dale, is the Robust closer to a full tang design than the other Moras? That has been a gripe of mine for a while, especially after they seemed to pay some extra attention to the bushcraft market over the last couple of years.
Is the grind a regular Scandi or something different? IIRC some of the bushcraft series knives used a different grind.
IMO a full(er) tang would add robustness. Or robustity. Or robustiliousness.
Jul 7, 2012 at 10:47 am #1892848I have used and abused Mora knives for decades and never had an issue with broken blades or loose handles, so I consider the tang length issue to be much ado about nothing. Try to remove a molded plastic handle. From a Mora— it is hard to even cut one off.
The tang is about 3/4 length from what I have read on the web.
Scandi grind— nice and simple.
