    Does anyone have experience or opinion about the Teva X-1 (lightweight shoe) for backpacking light?

    Some weights I looked up*:

    Nike Free 5.0 – 0,9
    Teva X-1 – 1,4
    Montrail Masai – 1,6
    Montrail Vitesse II – 1,8
    Chaco Z/2 Terreno – 2,8

    * pounds,ounces; pair

    Check out the thread entitled
    “Inov8 and Timberland Delerion Shoes”

    Craig Shelley has tried a number of shoes and has reported on how much water they have sucked up. He just picked up a pair of Teva X-1. A report soon, Craig?

    I have had a pair of X-1 for a couple of weeks. My size 10.5 are indeed around 20oz for the pair. Unless I was spending the vast majority of the time with my feet in water, I would take the Inov-8 flyroc 310 rather than the Teva X-1. Why? I really am sold by the flexibility of the flyroc. The X-1 is lighter, but my feet feel freer with the flyroc. I found that my feet got less sweaty in the flyroc than the X-1 even though the X-1 has the mesh side panels. The flyroc does a better job at holding my heel in the shoe, and the padding at the back of the shoe is more comfortable in the flyroc.

    As a side note… you list the Nike Free… I would not recommend hiking in those. The Free is little more than a sock with some very soft foam on the bottom. It’s meant to approximate the feeling of barefoot running and used as a training shoe for runners… for not more than one or two runs per week… on pavement / sidewalk / track. The sole is not very durable at all… very soft… not to mention it’s very smooth… so it would be extremely slippery in certain trail conditions. They are basically a step up from a pair of bedroom slippers. I know you were just listing it to compare weights… and not suggesting it as a hiking shoe necessarily… but I mention this just in case anyone was considering it. One look at the shoe and I imagine most people would come to the same conclusion anyway though.

    As Mark stated, there’s a discussion on shoes under a separate posting. I expanded it to include the X-1s recently.

    I will post everything after this message on the X-1s there.

    The X-1s are very stiff, much like the Salomon TechAmp Pros. The Flyrocs and Delerions flex very well. The Flyrocs have a very agressive tread compared with the X-1s.

    Without doing anything more than examining the X-1s, I believe they are strong competition to the TechAmp Pros and I would choose the Flyrocs over the X-1s for most hikes and backpacking trips.

    If you can purchase just one pair for the broadest range of conditions, the Flyrocs are definitely my choice right now.

    Craig
