Does anyone know where I can get someone to add pit zips to a jacket? Looking for a company or someone with good myog skills. Anyone?
May 11, 2014 at 4:56 pm #2101440Rather far for you, but http://www.rainypass.com probably could do it, they've got lots of technical skill at repairs. The worst problem I can think of is that there might not be enough fabric for a protective flap over top, so you will probably need a waterproof zipper, preferably one that has 2 sliders meeting in the middle. Sometimes called a "bag zipper" as they are sought after for women's purses.
May 11, 2014 at 5:06 pm #2101444I just sent my RAB Event jacket to Zpacks to have that done.
May 11, 2014 at 5:24 pm #2101449Tom, I am very interested in the results if you could make a post or pm me after you get it back I would much appreciate it
Thank
May 11, 2014 at 6:12 pm #2101464Very interested in this as well for future shells.
May 12, 2014 at 2:36 pm #2101713Rainy Pass will do it.
May 12, 2014 at 3:00 pm #2101724sell jacket, buy one with pit zips?
May 12, 2014 at 6:37 pm #2101805Hi,
I'll certainly post my opinions on the pit zips after I try it out for a while.
It's a great jacket , but I find that I sweat a lot wearing it while exerting myself beyond regular trekking, as in climbing, huffing and puffing etc.
I got a great deal on it from Midwest Mountaineering a few years back other wise I wouldn't spend the money.(not too much).

Tom LMay 13, 2014 at 6:33 am #2101913I have contacted Rainy Pass to see what they can do.
thanks
May 16, 2014 at 9:50 am #2102890I heard back from Rainy pass and they can do the mods but I didn't realize how expensive it was going to be. I'm going to have to think about this one a little more.

Sell jacket, buy one with pit zips
May 16, 2014 at 9:58 am #2102894Jerry do you have any recommendations? I would be looking for a similar jacket to the Rab Momentum (3L eVent) ~12oz with pitzips.
May 16, 2014 at 10:03 am #2102898Sorry, I'm a pit zip bigot – I haven't found them to be useful – just a fashion or fad. But other people swear by them and who knows, I could change my mind : )
May 16, 2014 at 10:08 am #2102899May 16, 2014 at 6:03 pm #2103128I have not received my jacket back from zpacks yet but the price was $30.
Its a RAB drillium.
Tom LJan 3, 2015 at 6:57 pm #2161302Tom –
Reviving an old thread… Do you mind sharing how the pit zip mod worked out from Zpacks?
Also:
1) were/are the pit zips made with waterproof zippers?
2) how long did you make them? Thanks!
Jan 3, 2015 at 7:34 pm #2161306I've had a local tailor do four jackets for me. If you supply them with the correct coil zipper (2 pulls, one at each end) and mark EXACTLY where you want them a tailor can do it.
HINT: When you bring the jacket to the tailor have the arm pit seams already unstitched where you want the zipper and it may lower the price a bit.
Jan 3, 2015 at 7:36 pm #2161307Peter,
The addition of the pit zips has helped bring down the inside temperature in the jacket. Not eliminated the problem but it sure feels a lot better now. Zpacks did an impeccable job.I tried to take some pictures but they really don't show well. The zippers are 12.5 inches long and I believe they are the waterproof uretek zips.
I had assumed that the Event material was going to be a huge step in getting rain gear to breath better but I found myself sweating as much as ever.Jan 3, 2015 at 7:56 pm #2161309Thanks Eric & Tom-
Not sure what a local tailor would ask for but if Joe still charges $30, that seems hard to beat… I'll give him a call tomorrow.
cheers,
Peter
Jan 3, 2015 at 8:53 pm #2161319I had zpacks add pit zips to my jacket and I am very pleased with the results. I would contact Joe
Nov 15, 2021 at 8:25 pm #3732368Evidently Joe and packs doesn’t do it anymore; got a quote from Rainy Pass of $185- going to take a hard pass on that.
Any other options?
Thanks
Mike

I was going to link to Santa Cruz Gear Repair too, but it looks like he had to close up shop.
