wondering how much more insulation wrapping thin torso pad around your midsection under a vest or jacket would provide? could there be benefits to carrying a torso pad this way? a vest like the argon vest from klymit could serve as a multi-use pad/vest if it where re-designed with that in mind…

It definitely works, it's just not as comfortable. I actually swam across a lake above tree line with my Ridgerest once. When I got to the other side a rain storm came in quick, I used the pad as a wind shield, I wrapped myself up in it and waited out the storm.
