    But, but, but…  With a mechanical pencil you don’t have to worry about the point breaking.  They are lighter for the amount of usage provided so they are obviously the correct choice for BPL.

    Funny you should ask, Dean. Just yesterday I was replenishing my emergency kit from the summer’s use. I didn’t like the way the golf pencil was just sitting there, with the tip unprotected. So I cut a 3/4″ piece of the right diameter silicone tubing that snugly fit the pencil, with a bit extending beyond the tip of the lead point to protect it. I wouldn’t exactly call it MYOG, because the scrap of tubing was just sitting idly on the table, just a foot from the pencil. It took all of 30 seconds see the solution and complete the job.

    Re: carrying loaded pencils

    Get some slip-on style erasers and put one over the sharpened tip.
