Has anyone noticed a major difference in durability between wool and fleece liner gloves? I'm thinking along the lines of wear and fraying on the palms from using trekking poles.

Oh yeah! The light synthetic liner gloves lasts us a whole lot longer.

    Cheers

+1 for synthetic. I have a cheap $1 pair from a gas station that weigh .8oz and have lasted years. Good investment!

Merino and velcro are mortal enemies. Merino loses.

Synthetic is going to much more durable than thin wool. I have a pair of wool gloves as my main hiking gloves, but I chose fingerless. The fingers are the first thing to bust out. The palms don't wear out very fast.

The other problem with wool liners are they don't grip anything well. Fingerless are a good option in summer if you want something to grip poles with.
