Emily and Casey with a Handful of Little Trouble Makers
It was great to see Emily & Casey with their darling kids, who we have had the pleasure to see growing up at each GGG that they have attended.
Casey's parents also came with them but I failed to get photos of them….great to see them too.
The Sun is Setting- Dinner Time!
The weather was quite good…clear, sunny skies. Though there were strong gust of wind to contend with just until sunset.
Surprised that so many people who had signed up were unable to make it out. They were sorely missed…always good to see old friends and to make new ones.

Stephen's MYOG Wind Screen
Clever little design that Stephen came up with the night before using light weight sheet metal of some sort. The two pieces were measured in grams and may be less than one ounce.
Stephen comments: Wind screen is stainless shim stock, .003" thick as I recall.
Warm Metal Glow
There are two parts two this wind screen. The lower portion that is not glowing red is a reflector that is like a "pie pan" that has slots/holes for the stove's burner and piezo electric ignition system.
The upper piece was a strip of metal that had a slot cut at one end to allow the two ends to be rolled together into a circle and held together. This then was simply dropped down onto the pie pan reflector to act as a wind screen and to funnel the flame/heat to the base of the pot.

Losing the Sun
With the sun coming down in a golden glow that filled the sky, we pulled on our insulated layers to keep warm. With hours of friendly conversations and funny stories to share ahead of us I was appreciating haven taken my Montbell Thermawrap pants and down Alpine Jacket to keep me toasty warm.
Typically, these would be items that would take into winter time, but with house of standing around or sitting in the darkness of night, they were welcome items to have.

Chris and Julie's Gift of Charcoal
They came over to our campsite in the evening time and lite up the charcoal and fired up some nice Adel Sausages to share with everyone.
Rowan also came out in the late afternoon and spent the evening chatting with us.
Unfortunately, I was neglectful in getting photos of them taken….though their company was greatly appreciated.

Bearikade Carbon Fiber Food CanisterKen H. deserves full credit for starting the 1st GGG and helping with the 2nd one, but it has been Ken T. who has been the driving force to not only organize these gatherings. Ken T. has thoughtfully put time and effort to make sure these events go smoothly and add little touches to make them all the more pleasant.

The Look of Love
Danny and Kristin were nice enough to let catch a ride with them so that I would have to take my chances driving in my 1994 Saturn.
Really enjoyed having time to chat with them and to get to know both of them a little bit. They have authored a number of articles on BPL too. With the short time that I have spent with them, one thing is clear- they are best friends and deeply in love, which is a joy to see in this day and age.

Oct 21, 2012 at 6:31 pm #1923521GGG 4.5 The one that almost got away.
Thanks so much to everyone who came out. Certainly a different dynamic than the GGG in Feb. We all had a very nice time.
I'll get some pics and words up in a little while.
Oct 21, 2012 at 8:47 pm #1923556I am sure sorry I missed this one. It looked like a great gathering as usual with a Ken T. production.
Dave, I like the way the bikepacking is evolving!
Thank you for the pictures and report Tony.
Oct 21, 2012 at 9:09 pm #1923561It was a quick trip and with a quick photo turn-around. Tony thanks for documenting, Ken for planning, and everyone else for making the trip out! It was a super fun weekend. I enjoyed meeting all of you. See you at GGG 5 if the little one hasn't made its way into the world by then.
Oct 21, 2012 at 9:18 pm #1923563Big thanks to Ken for organizing. We had a great time and look forward to the next one.
Oct 22, 2012 at 12:07 am #1923585I missed everything in the photos as I spent Saturday afternoon walking along the seashore and stayed in a site at the other end of the campground, but at least I did get to meet some of you Saturday night. Thanks again to the people who showed me their shelters!
Oct 22, 2012 at 8:10 am #1923612Thanks Ken for Point Reyes. Truly a beautiful place.
Oct 22, 2012 at 9:17 am #1923634That was a very nice trip. We just beat the weather!
Thanks for the photo essay Tony – great job.
HA! I found my frisbee – I can see it in the outside pocket of Ken's pack. Nice try Ken! ; )
Marc – Did you go down to the lighthouse Sunday morning. Great idea……
Oct 22, 2012 at 10:12 am #1923653Good times this weekend. It was nice to see some of you again and meet a few others. And thanks again for organizing, Ken and for getting the pictures up so fast, Tony.
What time did you all head out on Sunday morning? We slept in and when I walked over just after 9am it was a ghost town.
Here's a few of the pictures we took:
Saturday started off pretty foggy, but once it cleared up in the afternoon we took a walk on the beach. It looks nice, but it was quite windy.
We found a little cove to hang out in for a little while to escape the wind. I think it's the gap in the cliffs towards the upper left in the previous picture.

Oct 22, 2012 at 2:41 pm #1923718I'm sorry we didn't spend more time there so we would have been able to hear of adventures far and wide. It was fun to meet people who I only know by their posts (Casey, Danny&Kristin, Tony, and so on). Next time I'll stay for a whole weekend.
I showed off my new Love Bird Quilt, but I'd had a brain-fry event the prior night when I sewed the final bits. This morning I ripped and re-stitched, so it's all good now! I posted photos and a description of the Pad and Quilt Coupler
Oct 23, 2012 at 11:43 am #1923914Marc & Chris,
Thanks for posting up your photos.
I was lazy and only came out in the afternoon on Saturday and hung around camp….then left early on Sunday.
We all woke up early….break of dawn and had breakfast, talked for a bit, and broke down camp fast and took off.
In part, people had things to do and places to go….Ken has a 4-6 hour drive to make to get back home, so starting off early made sense.
Was fun to see everyone who could make it out.
Looking at everyone else's photos….I probably should have wandered off beyond the campground to see the stuff you did.
Great pics!

.. but you just did post. Ghost in the machine (probably an Arcteryx Bora 85 fan).
ADD: To the OP, looks like a great time was had by all. Remarkable to have all those backpacking areas near a major urban center.
Oct 28, 2012 at 1:26 pm #1924933Worked for me too.
Oct 28, 2012 at 1:26 pm #1924934Yes, it came as quite a surprise.
