In researching survival kit parts, I ran across this company. I have no experience with their products, so the usual caveat emptor:

Feb 28, 2007 at 11:45 am #1380443Dale these tend to be the ones you see at the checkout counter walls like in West Marine, Ramsey Outdoors, and other big box stores. They don't settle that quick IME and are small, so for those eyesight challenged folks they're pretty much a no go IMO.

Sun MiniComp IIPicked it up in an outdoors shop in the UK for about £8. It has lasted about 5 years so far, and is quite well made. I use it for everything – cycling, walking, visiting new towns, etc. I keep it on a lanyard around my neck, along with maybe a micro torch and a whistle.
In my survival tin I also have a tiny plastic 'button compass' as a backup.
