Locale: Northeast Texas Pineywoods

I have about 10 days between July 21- Aug 10. I would prefer to spend no more than 2 days driving from northeast TX. I have never hiked outside of AR,TX, NM and CO. AR,TX are obviously not an option, the next I'd have to plan around afternoon lightning storms. I'm not familiar with bug issues in other places, and I'd like some suggestions on locales where the bugs won't carry me away.
